I think it depends on how sick you are... The last time I tried to train while ill, I ended up in bed for a week afterward. I didn't even train very hard that day, nonetheless, it was more than my body could handle. These days, if I get sick, I take a couple days off and take care of my body like it's telling me it needs to be.

As much as my coach "take a salt tablet and wash it down with phosporus nitrate" instincts bark at me, I have to agree with K on this one.
You have a basic cold? Vapo-rub up, grab some menthol cough drops, and do what you can (I have had some excellent training days and even competitions while suffering from really nasty head colds).
You have a fever/diarrhea/vomiting/body aches/persistent wheeze and/or dizziness? You better be in the bed, in the bathroom, or in the kitchen filling your body with fluid, and nowhere else.

I'm with Josh and Kristyn. I've trained through nasty colds and actually felt better right after and the next day. However, fever and fluid loss means your body is already working overtime to beat something and it doesn't need you making it more difficult by training.

Thanks for the advice folks :YR: , I ended up trying to train but as I worked thru my first set of squats I just couldn't keep my head straight, or concentration, Needless to say I left and paid the price, I am know feeling tons better! Time to hit it hard for my first comp in March.

Thanks for starting this thread Adam. I get sick once every couple of years and this seems to be the year. I was wondering if I should attempt some type of exercise today. I will try drinking fluids and see how I feel later. My head is so stuffy I feel real foggy. I may take the advice from everyone and just rest until I am better. Stupid sick.

No no no, I am not going to do anything today. If I squat I will ruin my shorts, if I jog I will pass out from a lack of O2. I wonder if caffeine will help metabolize what ever evil demon lives inside of my face right now.

I'll train up to and including fever and minor bodyaches with no problem.
But if there is any kind of fluid loss, excessive coughing/sputum production, chills, I don't go. Although I"ll still crank out some pushups/crunches if I'm REALLY feeling like I need to do something.

Getting sick offers tremendous advantages. First - it's and idicator I have been slacking off on proper supplementation and nutrition/water intake. Second - if you are growing mentally stale it's a wake up call - things could always be worse. When you're healthy don't take it for granted.
I always make gains when I'm sick - I don't believe in just giving in - that's for weak people.
By the time the flu/or cold has left - I am back on track with training/rest/nutrition
Always try to find the good in everything.
By the way, I just finished overcoming the flu and I made a pr push press yesterday.

I think it depends on what kind of "sick" you are. Keep in mind Jeff that most people work full-time, have families and other commitments they might have to attend to. With that being said, not everyone is able to get the 8-10hrs of sleep required to properly recover and keep their immune system up to par. However, I do agree that can battle through some illnesses and have great training sessions.

Won't be training today because now I have it. Thanks Chris...actually it started with Jason to your Mom, you and now finally to me. I very seldom get sick so when I do why is it on the weekend. That is just wrong.

Oh and does it ever suck! Ha ha ha you were just bragging about how it missed you :N: Take these next couple of days to skip out on some lifting, get outside, and don't be afraid to cut back some of the food intake and lose a few pounds like you have been planning.

Besides who wants to see -or smell- some brown streaks on your shirts when you go down for some squats.

when I'm sick I take 5000mg of Vitamin C twice a day, you'll be better in no time :)
