Is it common for olympic lifters to have wrist injuries w/ the constant bending back of the wrists in the clean and jerk as well as the tremendous stress and strain of the snatch w/ that wide grip. I was doing snatch balance a few days ago and I think my right wrist was taking a toll...then the next day when i did snatch from the knees it just felt like i broke a bone. when i squeeze something w/ a pinch grip I feel a sharp pain in the middle left portion of my right wrist where it hinges with my hand. there is no swelling, but the pain is just wild. I've been doing ice massages with Flex-all and icing normally for 20 minutes. anything else I could be doing to get it back to normal as fast as possible?

thanx

when you say it feels like I broke a bone, what do you mean?
If tap the small bones in your wrist does it hurt? If you squeeze the small bones does it hurt? the small bones in your wrist do not have a very good blood supply and can take along time to heal. If you do have a fracture there is nothing you can do to speed recovery time besides immobilization. If you truly feel you broke something, get it looked at.

If it is just tendonitis- ice, Alieve, rest, support it with a wrist wrap when training.

BACK OFF NOW a little on your volume/intensity. I strained my outer elbow a while back because I was introducing too much grip-work volume too quickly. I'm not suggesting to lay off, just back off the intensity a little and cut some volume for a bit. Your body is telling you something. You might want to try wrist wraps for a while and then, if you don't like using those, wing off them slowly.

Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong: If you feel it is the snatch grip causing the problem, try bringing in your grip just a little. Then, over time, move it back out in small increments over a period of time.

It's all about adaption.

just got back from vacation...haven't trained at all in a week.

i can grip stuff and my wrist doesn't hurt...but if i put my hand on a flat surface and work my arm so that it is perpendicular with my hand it hurts. I found the exact spot that hurts by pressing with my left thumb and it doesn't feel like a bone which is a good thing. I think it might be a tendon, ligament or something of that nature. there is no swelling at all...but when my wrist gets bent back it hurts like a mother.

NSAIDS help with the pain? You said no swelling but just curious.

i believe you may be confusing swelling and inflammation.

swelling involves a fluid build-up, is usually visible, and has a quick onset. inflammation on the other hand involves the actual bodypart (muscle, tendon, ligament, etc), increasing in size, which is not always visible, but still can cause pain. NSAIDS will reduce inflammation-induced pain, but won't do anything for swelling ;)

I wacked my wrist really good about two weeks ago ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leJ8wp2VMOw ) and sprained it. You'll notice in most my vids now I wrap my wrists up. It's very common for weightlifters, especially when hammering form and heavier weight. I bought a reinforcing brace to wear when I sleep and work, and I wrap up tight when training.

You might have a problem with your carpal tunnel complex....with the median nerve being compressed by the carpal ligament.

Last Mon,I did a few sets of hang cleans using a light weight(55kg) for low reps as I am new to the movement.

After finishing all the sets,I feel a slight pain in my right wrist.I thought I could shrug it off until the next morning....where I found turning the key painful...

It has been 9 days since,I can turn the key to my door now,but the pain is still there if I clench my fist or turn my wrist from a hammer position to an underhand position. It also hurts when I hyperextend it.

I thought the pain would go off after a few days rest,so I used the injury as an opportunity to take a layoff.

Since I can't clench my fist-that means no back movements
Since I can't hyperextend it-that means no pressing movements

The only thing I can think I can do is Zercher Squats.

Damm frustrating and demoralizing...

I'm having the same problem as Ben with my right hand. I need to go see this ART guy everyone's talking about here in Boise.
