Friends just called - they will be here momentarily. We're cooking tacos.
I thought of just having beef jerky and protein shakes, but they're just fans, so Kristal wouldn't let me.

you know, I knew how this turned out already. And I was still pissy after watching a certain qualifier.
THis is the only sport I watch/follow, and of course none of my friends do.
So lonely Indian is eating himself stupid on pizza, tostitos and queso. And trying not to cry because he is so, so alone.

How about Phil on that deadlift? I am blown away that he is dead last as of the deadlift...
But yeah, Jesse smoked those kegs.

that last event loading the kegs out of the water is just plain sick, and the work of a sick mind whoevever thought of it, and even sicker for saving it for last

We will have pre-orders for Phil's Training Gym Training video up in a few days.
As he said. The training was harder than the events.

Man, watching Dominic Filiou on the stone lift, at the end where he got frustrated and threw the stone down, all I could think of was "HULK SMASH!" Why didn't they have him in the movie instead of the computer generated crap the used?

I am at work so I have set my DVR to record everything that goes down this year. I will probably burn it on to DVD so I can always go back and watch it again and again and again. I have been watching bits and pieces of it and that Darren Sadler is making me eat my words about doubting a short guys chance at being the WSM. Just look at the way he and Nigmatulin tore up the Fingal fingers :disgust:

it jut ended.... man Phil dominated the last 5 events.... i annot belive how close the stones were between Phil and Mariuz... Jeez it must of been a split secound difference between the two of them. I mean i already new the results ut it still had me on the edge of my seat.
Kinda would like to see Mr Marund back on top next year!

BEST WSM EVER!!!!
Seriously, America just might do what Scandinavia did in the 90's, and what Eastern Europe did in the beginning of this century... with a healthy Jesse, a more motivated Nee and Yoshi - we might have a chance at keeping that polish army away :B:

Marius was not at his best and Phil capitalized on it! Its great to see 2 american's on the podium
On a side note i was very impressed with the great attitude and demeanor of all the US competitors

Loved Pfister's victory roar!! Mariusz was so frustrated, he's the dominator..so he probably is uncomfortable with close contests. Now time to see if Phil can match Kazmaier's 3 in a row. He's got the championship...now time to start a legacy. No rest for the Wolfman.
Nods to Darren Sadler and Arild Haugen. Will be great to watch them progress and compete against Kevin Nee and Jesse Marunde.
The Polish Crew were running around like they owned the place.
They got PWNED by USA!!!

I didn't like how they basically skipped the stone press and bus pull events in the finals. :EP:
Brandon Campbell

well teh bus pull is a long event to get on TV, takes awhile and the stone press was boaring as many didnt even get the first or second stone. Soo kudos to them for getting to the good stuff :p
Alot of cool events this year for TV, and alot of crappy ones i never want to see again. LOL

they do that every year because they can't quite seem to fit it all into 47 minutes. The stones and bus pull were messed up. Most everyone easily pressed 2 stones and then stuggled for a full minute on the 3rd. There was nothing unique about each attempt. Everyone went the full time on the bus pull and it was moving very slow. The distances were not that great. So again, it would have been a boring even to watch except for Phil and Marius coming so close to one another. I saw it live and it was boring...
I sure wish the contest was held in better locations so there could be a crowd. There's hardly anyone there just like at IFSA worlds. Man that's pathetic! Think of the crowd that would gather at a proper venue in a place like Vegas!

Kaz was all over Dominic for his lack of intensity. It didn't seem like his heart was in it, but who's to say.
That was a close finish, Marius was ticked!! Congrats to Phil, but I really want to see Jesse on top of the podium next year!!

Hey just the fact that it was a US 1,2 showed the world that the US is not an "Also Competed" nation. Its time to show the Europeans what we can do!! :T:

I loved that stone press. It takes pure pressing power to put 'em up. It kind of levels the playing field so, people with Olympic-style jerks don't have an advantage. I noticed that IFSA did the same things with the aluminum blocks. To me that is "strongman" instead of "technique man". It make me want to go to a quarry and start pressing s**t.

I thought it looked like Filiou EDIT
myself, but maybe he was injured or something. It is hard to tell. maybe, too, he was just washed out. I gotta believe carrying around 400 pounds will wear you out, but jeez, that guy has so much potential and it looked like was just happy with failing on the stone press and it looked like he was pooped in the keg pool.

I had to chime in with my two cents worth after watching the 2006 WSM. Was is up with D.P. of Canada? This gut is listed as 441lbs. and he lifts one single stone weighing 227lbs, in the overhead stone press? It appeared to me a lack of dedication and commitment to the events, did anyone else have the same feeling after watching his performance? It didnt appear he weanted to be there.
Kevin Klavetter
12-24-2006, 12:31 PM
I agree. Dominic just didn't seem to have any desire. Maybe that or he just doesn't have the agility and coordination for WSM and kind of realized it. His performance along with the graet showing of Darren Sadler pretty much puts to rest the thread a while back about the sport being taken over by giants. This giant sure isn't taking over anytime soon. On a side note although the local Chinese guy had improved from last year and gave it everything he had, I still have an issue with a local spot going to a less qualified guy. A lot of others could have been in that spot and been more competitive.

ya I agree. those two pulls were probably the two best pulls in the history of pulling. I tested the bus and I'm a decent puller... but those guys gutted out a distance unreachable by me. amazing!

Kaz, as everybody else, knows the potential of Dominic Filiou. It was sad to see him give up on the final event but...he was probably upset at the overhead stone press performance. Really it seemed like his chest and arms were too big to do that event. I bet he was strong enough, just too big. Seems like he lets things get in his head easily.
Jesse looked to be in the best shape though....just held back a little too much as he said.
Mariusz now knows why only two men have ever gotten 4 championships in 29 years. It is probably one of the hardest achievements to get in sports history. 3 in a row is also. Neither of which Mariusz has. He looked frustrated because now he hs to work for one year longer then planned...haha.
Now we'll see if Phil just wanted it one time, or if he's in it for the long haul.

Weird weird competition. I kinda expected this would be the year Americans made their return. I just thought I'd see different people on the podium than I did. Phil's been at this forever, and I'm glad to see him get his due. And as for Don, stellar achievement there as well. He's definitely a competitor, but I'd never thought of him as a podium finisher.
Ah well, can't wait for next year. Jesse'll be back and better than ever, and I'm excited to see what Ostlund, Nee, and Thigpen can pull off too. Who knows, maybe next year we can have an all American top three.

Man, I'm impressed with Phil, Pope, and Felix. It was the most exciting ending to a WSM ever. I wish they would do these contests in places more people would show up as well. Of course Vegas comes to my mind too, Jesse.
Anyway, I was really impressed with Phil's performance. I've never been much of a Phil fan. I thought he talked too much (and that's coming from a black former football player :FF: you know how we like to talk sh--), and didn't win as much as the hype claimed he should. But I guess working with Siders has greatly improved his static strength. I did not expect him to pull that well in the deadlift or complete the stone lift. His improvements were out of this world. Some of the IFSA athletes believe Felix and Pfister left IFSA because they couldn't handle the heavy weights there. I find that a bit hard to believe. I do know the IFSA weights are a bit heavier, but I think both those cats would do fine in IFSA meets as well. I've never bought a training vid from anyone before. Mainly because I'm a firm believer that no two peoples training should be identical. We are all unique. But I'm curious to see what Phil did to improve his static strength this year. It was insane. I'm now a fan!!!

Do you mean before or during the contest? My guess is they just talked to him and Jesse a lot because they were seen as having the best chance to beat Mariusz, plus, for ESPN, they need to interview an American who can speak English fairly well and that is representative of their audience. I mean, the British TV would probably interview Hollands and Sadler more than Pfister, and Polish TV would talk to Mariusz.

Mac, I think Phil's previous talking (specifically the "America will have World's Strongest Man someday, I will be there, Amen!") was as motivated by something more than ego, but Nationalism. Wade Gillingham wrote an article in this month's MILO reminding us that the Phil creed was on the heels of the September 11th attacks, and Phil did get 4th that year behind Svend, Janne, and Magnus... setting a World Record in the Atlas Stones and Farmer's Walk during his qualifier. Personally, considering where American strongman was then, and where it is now, I believe that was a stellar performance.
Phil also did really good at IFSA last year, pretty much dominating the Pan Ams and placing top 10 at IFSA worlds. Phil is deserving of being, along with Kirit, Gilly, and Scoonie, the best strongmen that America has produced with a career over the past 8-10 years. We now have Pope, who is competing year round internationally, Jesse, who has always been our Super Series Superstar, Ort, who will be the IFSA champion one day, Nick Best, Ostlund, just TONS of exceptional strongmen growing out of the foundation that a handful of guys forged... along with a fantastic Amateur support base via NAS.

Man, I have been spending this Christmas weekend with my family, none of whom have ESPN or a VCR to record the WSM this year! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of the footage. I've been telling people that an American won for the first time in 24 years and they're all impressed even though most of them don't follow the sport. They just know that it's usually some Eastern European guy who takes home the gold.

Josh, I have no problem with his 'phophecy'. I'd seen Phil in a couple of contests several years ago and he came across a bit obnoxious. By this he would hog the mic, make absurb predictions, etc. But he hadn't (at the time) won anything significant. By again, I'm now a fan and respect what the man has done to get to the pinnacle of our sport.

Like Jouka Ahola said...winning it once is easy....it's the follow -up that determines whether or not your for real. Except in the case of Svend Karlsen...he only wanted the complete collection of trophies...Bronze, Silver, Gold,...3,2,1.....which in itself is an amazing feat to plan out and accomplish.
If Phil wants more then one year with the title....then the next WSM will be huge and probably the most competitive WSM ever.
