So on Saturday I walked about 2 miles with 40-50lbs on my back. I wasn't planning on doing this so I was wearing chucks. When I tried farmers pickups on Sunday my strength was way down and the tendons on the front of my ankles are really sore today. Has anyone had this sort of pain before? I'm using my standard treatment of contrast baths and advil for now but any advice would be appreciated.

I believe the pain is from using tibialis anterior to slow the descent of your foot when you step forward onto your heel.
Try some shoes with thicker souls that absorb more impact, you may find that you allow your foot to "fall" quicker and use that muscle less. You'd probably find that walking up a slight gradient would make it better.

It can help to stop every mile and do some stretching of all the muscles from hips down to ankles. Keeps you loose and stops you gradually modifying your stride as certain muscles tire or contract too much.

I did a 940 mile walk with 100lb pack last summer and ended up with all sorts of niggling problems like that and had the time to sort most of them out. Tibialis anterior was a problem for me at the beginning but it soon sorts itself out if you keep it stretched.

If you're gonna do any serious walking get some poles, makes a hell of a difference if you're big and carrying a lot of weight.

It was a pretty dumb thing to do really bearing in mind my size and lack of previous walking experience. I was supposed to do 1500miles and walked myself into the ground around 940 or so :o
lol, I even took my #3 with me so I could train my grip. I sent that home pretty soon, I overestimated my carrying capacity.
At least I learned some very good lessons...like not doing it again! :D

Walking is now one of the few subjects I can talk about from experience. Every forum needs a walker!

Here in our country rarely someone walks more than 1km except me :p . People here are used to drive and show off with there new car. I don't say I don't like to show off but I really don't like to let my driver work 24 hours for me. I like to walk and sometimes run with ankle weights.

Explanation here (http://www.walknorway.com)

I was cursing my stupidity a lot of the time but I'm glad I did it now and it's sort of like a dividing line in my life.

Before I started on my route I got to meet Svend Karlsen in Kristiansand and go along to watch him do some event training, that was so so cool. Got some good advice on some stuff and watched him do 10 reps on a 308lb log and then 2 on a 352lb. Demon pressing power. I had injured my back with an atlas stone the week before I left England (cos I'm stupid) so I was just about able to load his plates :o

Alawadi,

My God Father and one of his best friends used to race Off-Shore Boats in UAE. His name is Val Ash and his Friend was Randy Cisim....They won a lot of races - made a butt load of money over there......They said it was very nice.
