I went to watch the event and yeh, jesse was great. He is also very big! He won the first 3 events, very impressive...One of the greatest feats ive ever seen was him pumping out all them reps with the inch dumbell. The day was great. Jesse proved to be the definate crowd favourite...

I was invited last thing to my first international comp last week! I walked through the door to be greated by big Glenn Ross! as I was talking to Glenn A large set of hands grabbed my shoulder from behind and to my surprise there he was Jolly Green Jesse himself! Me myself and my girlfriend really enjoyed jesse company(larger than life, lol)! On the day of the competition I never seen a athlete sign so many autograghs and spend so much time messing around in between events! I hope his head ache isnt to bad when when he gets home to you Callie - me and Jesse enjoyed a couple of pints of Guiness on the last night( I think he was a little worse for wear, lol!) This weekend was a good experience for me and I made a friend for life, next time he`ll have to bring you along Callie we heard alot of good things about you! I`ll upload some pics later and send you a couple!

Im not sure which event jesse was most dominant in the inch dbell press where I think he did 11 easy reps! or I the medley which is one of the best finishes I`v ever seen, only 4 men completed the medley 400kg tyre flipx2, and carry 380kg frame 11m to the line! jesse flipped the tyre easy finished the medley run a full lap of the field slaping everyone hands before anyone finished!

dragon.. can you explain what happened on the deadlift?? Did Jesse pass thinking he had won??

D.Norris
06-06-2005, 09:48 AM
The deadlift starting weight was supposed to be 300kg(untested) my best deadlift is about the same as Jesse`s I whent first no lift! a couple of guys after me and they couldnt lift it Simon flint was one of them and he has a 365kg deadlift, no lift! only three guys lifted it and they have 380kg + deadlifts! so Jesse just saved his energy for the next event!

thanks everyone! I'm still working on my full report so I'll get that up ASAP.

Chad, sorry I didn't get your message untill I got home! Yes the event was supurb and the athlete treatment was A+. Everything was smooth and stress free. The crowd was large and really into the action. I'm sorry you couldn't make it, but am very thankful for the oportunity to test myself.

Dale, no headache Mate. I woke up as good as new... :T:
(note to self: NEVER drink guiness with a 370 pound man from Wales...)

First let me thank Glen Ross for inviting me to England’s World Strongman Cup! It was a last minute invitation that I was thrilled to except. The flight over was smooth and only took about 12 hours to get to Manchester before being crammed into a backseat with 2 other competitors. All expenses were paid for so I was able to go all the way to Yorkshire and back home on less than 50 bucks! You can’t beat that!

The day before the contest we went to the location and messed around. I went on this ride with my non-English speaking roommate, the Russian Adrunis. We were launched like 150 feet into the air in like 2 seconds. The fall was intense! I thought my stomach was going to bust open. What a rush! I learned 27 Russian profanities in about 5 seconds! Video of the ride will be posted in the media section. I also got to hold several different birds of prey, which I thought was totally sweet. I’ve always loved falcons. We got to watch them hunt and grab food out of the air and off the ground too. Very cool!

I also did an aerobics class on little trampolines. Let me tell you, that stuff is WAY harder than it looks! I got my butt kicked in about 3 minutes!

The first event was the truck pull. I got to go last because I drew the #12 out of the hat. I had a terrible start. I saw a picture of myself standing almost straight up… I really need to fix my starting pull bad! But I was able to overcome the poor start by really digging down and trying to move fast. I came out on top and was the only competitor to break the 26 second mark.

The next event was the tire flip and farmers medley. I found this event to be very easy. The tire was about 1000 pounds and it flipped easily twice. The farmers walk apparatus was just shy of 800 pounds but the handles were rough and easy to hold on to. I took a lap around the arena and was more tired from that than the actual event…

Glen asked me how many presses I was gong to get with the Inch dumbbell and I said, “One more than you!” He laughed at me. Whose the daddy now? I pressed 4 reps left handed, then switched to my right and nailed 6 more. It wasn’t easy and I definitely had to dig down and focus. I was the only competitor who didn’t drop or set down the DB. I maintained good control and felt well balanced.

In the deadlift event the opening weight was about 340 kilos I was told from the guys who lifted, or failed to lift it. I opted not to attempt it because I didn’t think I could do it and I was worried about doing a max lift without a single warm up lift. As it turns out I wish I had tried because earning ZERO points in that event and Glen gaining 12 turned the contest in his favor. Cheers to glen for EASILY pulling the weight.

The even that I am most proud of is the squat. We were made to squat on a smith machine type set up with 660 pounds for maximum reps. Our squats were judged each rep for depth and I was surprised to see that judge, Gary Taylor, was taking reps away from guys whose depth seemed to be right at parallel! Every one was squatting REALLY deep in order t avoid losing any reps. I gave it all I had and grinded out 9 reps. I was toast after that! I feel that this was by far my best ever squatting performance in or out of the gym. I tied for 4th place but couldn’t be happier with my efforts.
<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:p></O:p>

The final event was the stones and I only got 4 rocks up. I missed the 352 pound 5th stone. I lapped it twice but it was stuck in my lap. My glutes, hams and low back was smoked after the squat. I did manage a 2nd place finish anyways though.

So I ended up in 3rd place overall and feel very motivated to get back in the gym. I am proud to have received the Sportsman Award, which was an unexpected honor. One my long time hero’s, Gary Taylor, presented me with the award to the cheers of the still present crowd.

A lot of the competitors in the contest I had never met or even know about prior to my arrival. I was amazed at the strength of some of the guys. Full results will be up soon so I won’t bother typing them now. But suffice to say, the World Cup Strongman circuit was tougher than I thought it was going to be.

I’m home now after a 7 hour delay in New York. I feel awesome and plan to train this after noon. I have no pains because the contest was safe and sane and the events were well tested. This was one of the finest, and definitely the most fun contest I’ve done to date. If you ever get a chance to see or watch on TV a Strongman World Cup event, do it! They are very entertaining events. The contest is focused on the audience. Entertainment is the main goal, although the legitimacy of the tests of strength is in no way compromised. Amazing, organization that is fan friendly!

Cheers to all who made the contest possible. But most of all cheers to the awesome crowd and fans that inspired me to do my best. Through out the contest the crowd was going nuts. True strongman fans the lot of them! Also, good luck to the majorettes in all your future endeavors. All you young strongmen out there, watch out for these girls!

Yours in strength and good sport,

Jesse

Hey Jesse, thanks to you and Dale for all the photos and write-up. You both did the contest at short notice and you really seemed to have had a great time. I'm sure the crowd loved it and I see you got to try out the British version of post workout recovery drinks. I'm a bit homesick now!

It has to be said, Ive been thinking about competing in strongman for over a year now. Ive been training in the gym, on and off and with event equipment whenever I could, but something always turned me away from competing.

I was happy to attend on Sunday and watch my first, international competition (thanks to Glenn for the invite!!)

I knew it would be a good day, but I wasnt prepared for just how good of a day it was.

After the truck pull, I got to meet Glenn Ross, a friend who I have been talking with and helping out for over 18 months, but still never met. I got to meet Jesse straight after and I couldnt believe the size of him (Jesse, you're a big dood).

I had the pleasure of watching and filming the competition, but something more than that....

After watching Jesse's performance with the railway walk, I was truely inspired to start all over again!

All of the guys did extremely well, but getting to meet Glenn, Jesse, Dale and Garry Taylor was a real honour and I have to say thanks to all of you for lighting a fire under my ass once again!

You guys rock :YR:

get back to work man, you're naturally tall and thick. you could rock the circuit with some quaility time under tension.

You're welcome, Jesse. I was mainly going by how you train and what you manage to lift. (the 380 pond stone in training) Competitions can be tough because of time limits and just the general pressure. 380 or close to it is impressive!
