Many old time powerlifters and bodybuilders swear by a beer or two following a workout, what do you guys think? I also heard Arnold say he prefers beer also. What's the deal?

By old time powerlifters I'm talking about Robert Patterson, Jim Vironin, Jeff Matty, Scott Warman, Rick Trevizo, etc. (I was trained by these guys in high school. Robert Patterson is my god-father. He used to train with OD Wilson and Steve Goggins in the Army. Rick Trevizo is a child hood friend of mine).

Hey Mac, I don't drink, but ask the Pacific Northwest guys the question again in about two weeks, after the contest at the Redhook Brewery. We're getting some (almost) free beer coupons for the athletes -- 'buy one get another one free'. Hopefully they won't try it until the contest is over.

That's because after a contest you're probably thirsty, so you can down a tonne of liquids. However, drinking alcohol only worsens the affects of post-workout/contest fatigue, since it'll dehydrate you even more. It's like anti-creatine.

Yeah, well, Im an old fat guy and I know living life is what is most improtant.

And part of my life is BEER! :D



p.s. Im well aware of the ill effects of alcohol and the detriment it causes post workout. But I dont care................................

Along with alcohol dehydrating you, it also degrades protein synthesis.. So its something I wouldnt recommend. Arnold was amazing.. dont get me wrong, but when it comes to nutrition and training he is not someone I would take advice from. You have to remember these guys are old school.. there are better/smarter/more scientific ways to do things now days. People are bigger/stronger/faster than ever before. There is no reason to go backwards.

Amen Brother, I am all for getting stronger and in better shape, but touch my beer or whiskey and feel my wraith :EL:

Training keeps me healthy, alcohol keeps me sane!

i don't drink right after lifting, but i do think of beer as part of my nutrition plan. the darker the beer the better. i'm a old ,fat ,hard working german, what else can i do?

Lol, probabaly everyone on this board has at least the occasional drink, and it probabaly doesn't really matter in the long run. Truth is though, it dehydrates you lowering your anabolic potential, decreases protein synthesis by up to 20% for strength/size gains. And if you're worried about fat-alcohol contains 7 empty calories per gram and disrupts the kreb cycle which can cause fat burning to stop all together. It's obviousl beer isn't exactly good for you though...

I dont drink beer anymore.If I drink anything its a long island or something of that nature,although I dont drink very often.
