Camcorder recommendations

Hey Guys - I know this was posted a few months back, but with changing technology, I need some recommendations for the best camcorder. I am curious about brand and type... DVD, MiniDV, Hard Drive, High Def, etc. The camcorder will be used for family videos to make DVD's and load onto a computer. I'm not too worried about price. I want the best recommendations. I do want something compact though... I want it to be easy to bring with me or for my wife. User friendly would be nice too.
