View Full Version : Training for my first competition

Its been a few months since I trained at all in the gym and longer since I touched any strongman equipment.

Ive been having motivational problems, injuries and generally wimping out when things get a little tough, but talking with Dale, Jesse and Spencer really helped me light a fire under my lazy behind once again.

If decided that its time to start training again, but this time no quitting!

Im a stubborn man and I want to aim higher and put myself under the gun to put in some "time under tension" so Im making a leap of faith and Im now training for the Uks Strongest Man qualifiers next year.

I never really stuck at my training long enough to see how far I could go, but I know in my heart I can do this....even if I come last at least Im going for it...man Im excited!

Im going to hit the gym ASAP, which will be made a damn site easier when I buy my bike....at least the only person I can blame for being late then is myself!!

Anyway, Ive been training grippers for a little while and Ive already seen a noticeable amount of progress with them.
Three months ago I couldnt close the HG200, now Im repping it for 5 or 6 reps on a regular basis and Ive managed to close it with both hands.
The HG250 isnt far behind and the HG300 will soon be mine also.

Today, me and my buddy got his farmers cylinders out from the back yard and decided to have go, even though it was raining cats and dogs.

The best I have ever done is 100kg per hand (220lbs) for 34 meters and my grip always let me down.
Today I didnt know what to expect considering I have done nothing but sit on my behind for nearly 3 months with no training what so ever. The first run with the new cylinders (about 235lbs) and I managed 3 meters!!!!!! DOH

I chalked up for my next run, put a little chalk on the handles (it was pouring down at this point) stood between them, hoisted and started to run.......I was amazed....I managed to hit 40 meters followed by a 2nd run of 35 meters and still feeling fresh for another run of 25 meters!

My first day back and Ive hit a PR and I am stoked!

I had my first attempt at my new axle today, its not heavy, about 65kgs (143lbs) but boy was it hard to get used too.

The last time I tried to powerclean the axle, I busted my wrist pretty bad and hence I was cautious using an alternate grip and catching it in a zercher style, then knocking out 2 sets of 3.
I decided to try power cleaning it and to my surprise, it was no problem, so I knocked out another set of 3 for good measure.

I know these weights aint much compared to you guys, but Im pleased with my first day, especially with the farmers.

I got about 12 months until the qualifiers and Im looking forward to giving it my best shot!!

Wish me luck guys :BB:

#EDIT#

After the hammering my grip took with the farmers, I finished off with some negative holds and high lightweight reps on the HG100 grippers.

Im hoping to deadlift tomorrow too!

good luck Mike, get us plenty of pictures while you're there ;)

I was considering trying out in the novice competitions, but I really wanted to give myself the baptism of fire by throwing myself into the deep end and seeing what happens!

I joined my mate and his sidekick for a deadlifting session today and Im damn glad I did!!!

My personal best on the deadlift before I tucked tail and walked away before was 205kgs x 2 so today was basically getting back to business after 2.5 months.

Anyway, the usual warmup is 60kg x 8, 100kg x 6, 140kg x 3
I decided to warmup a little more today before going on.

Deadlift warmup:
60kg x 10
100kg x 8
140kg x 6

I didnt want to start at rock bottom and was confident that I wasnt too far out from my previous top end so......

(previous PR 205kg x 2)
180kg x 3 fast, powerfull and felt good. I went for a fourth, but narrowly missed out.
160kg x 5 again fast and powerfull!!!!

Hyper Extensions x 12, no weight for now.

Barbell Shrugs
100kg x 15
140kg x 15 Then a protein drink!

All in all, it feels good to be back and it feels good to know that Im no rusty in any way and I can hit my top end soon and cycle back for more....hoorah!

ScottDowney
06-19-2005, 09:45 AM
It was a rather close and silly hot today and I didnt know how things were gonna go.

Axle Press:
60kgs (roughly) x 4
62.5kg x 1
65kg x 1
67.5kg x 1
70kg x 1
72.5kg x 1
92.5kg failed
60kg x 5

Im going to start working up the weight on reps basically adapting my deadlift routine into the axle/log press, but wanted to test myself today!

Crucifix:

A really poor and frankly embarassing 26 seconds

Farmers Walk (approximately 105-110kgs)
40 metres
40 metres
40 metres
30 metres
10 metres

And that was it for today, I'll be hitting axle and farmers through the week and hopefully some stones in the next few weeks!

Still though, I got about 11-12 months to go before the quals and I'll get there with some hard work under my belt!!

Nice session there Scott, now pull your finger out of your ass and keep plugging away!

Like I said the wether didnt help today at all!

ScottDowney
06-19-2005, 12:55 PM
Cheers buddy and dont worry....that finger is well and truely outta my butt now and its time to get serious.

I'll be at those qualifiers next year...whether I qualify or not is a different matter :M:

I'll be out training again through the week with the equipment and Saturday I'll be deadlifting again...hopefully if my mate can get me this bike, I'll be squatting and benching through the week too :BP:

Heres a few pictures of us training in the blistering heat yesterday!

ScottDowney
06-20-2005, 03:45 AM
The log Rob (training partner) is pressing weighs about 130kgs empty :BB:
The tyre is about 450kgs

And incase anyone is wondering.....the guy in the white vest is my popz...still trying to compete against us at 51 years old :M:

ScottDowney
06-20-2005, 03:48 AM
The farmers we're using are Robs old creations, but we've had them filled in and capped off....they're about 105kgs.

i want the anvil (drool) i already have a forge, neat

ScottDowney
06-22-2005, 03:32 PM
So you like our anvil then Patrick??? Our favourite piece of kit

Todays training:
Axle press
60kg x 1...couldn't get my position right
60kg x 5
60kg x 6

Beat my reps from Sunday....desperately need to get some weights for it though!!!!!!!!

Gripper Work:
HG250 x 5 attempt closes (2mm out from closure on my right, 10mm on my left)
HG200 x 5 attempt closes (serious loss of power due to a dodgy wrist)
HG150 x 12 + 12 inverted closes
HG100 x 25 + 12 inverted closes
HG100 x 20 + 15 inverted closes
HG100 x 5 top 2 finger closes + 5 last 2 finger closes

My left wrist feels ok, but my right wrist feels a bit off.
I seem to have aggravated the tendonitis in my right elbow and its burning like hell, but it'll go away!

Next up....deadlifting

Patrick McGuffin
06-22-2005, 06:17 PM
you are definately getting closer to closing tha gripper than me 5mm and 13mm (right then left) at the moment the closest thing i got to an anvil is a peice of railroad track, how heavy is it and can you use it as a hussafel stone

ScottDowney
06-23-2005, 01:32 AM
Thats a damn good start dude.

With the anvil we have a handle attached so we can do waddle walk, we can husafell it and if we're feeling frisky, we can try lift it from the floor (Best Ive got so far is just above my knees)

The HG250 will fall soon, but I havent really trained grippers specifically for a few weeks due to the strongman training absolutely wasting my grip.

I got the 400 and 500 too....I cant close them but man I love to try :BB:

english sasquatch?? haha

ScottDowney
06-27-2005, 03:04 AM
I was supposed to be training through this week, but I have a bit too much to get sorted first.

Ive just bought my motorcycle and it needs some light restoration work and hence is now in bits in my yard until its running again.

Im hoping to train grip wednesday and deadlift on saturday and when the bikes done.....I cant train all my movements woohoo!

English Sasquatch out

06-27-2005, 09:26 AM
You can always use the bike as weight on your conan's wheel! :)

ScottDowney
06-27-2005, 12:03 PM
Not a bad idea that

Now I must remember to get a conans wheel built up :)

In the Uk (well, where I am) we suffer with a serious lack of space and if we have space, we tend to suffer with a serious lack of level space to do stuff like that.

We're working on it however

Patrick McGuffin
06-27-2005, 12:27 PM
space issues are not confined to the uk, my house is surrounded by houses with 1/2 acre back yards and we dont even have one!oh well whats important is that my front yard has enough space for a few stone platforms, :M: and i can use the street for farmers, tire, ect..

ScottDowney
06-27-2005, 01:53 PM
Its a long story to go into, but the bottom line is

We use our street for farmers/duckwalk/husafell and any arm over arm pulls.
We use our yards for overhead press/atlas stones (training partner) tyre flip/crucifix.

My mates sister doesnt like strongman equipment in the yard and my yard is all over the place and needs sorting which Im doing soon!

Plus, we need more equipment, but thats all in hand :BB:

I cant wait to find somewhere big and level to train though

ScottDowney
06-29-2005, 01:47 PM
Not much to report except the fact that I have now closed the HG250 gripper

woooooohoooooo

Patrick McGuffin
06-29-2005, 05:07 PM
yay.... i am guessing by the end of the summer i will get it :)

ScottDowney
06-30-2005, 02:50 AM
it may come sooner patrick...I havent properly trained grippers for 2-3 weeks and it fell no problem!

Keep at it bro :)

Patrick McGuffin
06-30-2005, 09:12 PM
muahahahaha!! your kind words inspired me so i tried with all my might to close it and i almost got it ( within 2mm), but, every finger in my hand popped and my face got all red in the process, i think i tried too hard :D

ScottDowney
07-01-2005, 01:50 AM
Ive been stuck at the same point for a while Patrick until that ay and it closed easier thatn the HG100.

When I train grippers properly, I usually train for 5 weeks utilising Clay Edgins ideal of going for 5 attempt closes and inverted attempt closes with the goal gripper, then big negative holds until the hand completely opens with the biggest I can cheat close then do the same all the way down the range. Then I go for big reps with the HG150 both conventional and negative then working huge amounts of reps with the HG100, conventional, invetered, 2 finger closes ( 1st 2 fingers then last 2 ) but I found that 1-2 weeks away from this training usually gives my hands enough of a rest to close the bigger gripper or at least get further with it!

Keep at it dude, you'll smash it

ScottDowney

Im now getting back into the swing of regular event training now that we have somewhere to play and I can now borrow my popz car on a weekend.

Bikes still not ready so I havent got around to training through the week

Anyway, here goes:

Sunday September 18th:

Got my ass out of bed early this morning to hit my first strongman session in a long time

I havent done any log pressing for ages, but was happy to nail what I thought was a 70kg log for 2 singles. I never got much over that when I was training full time, but the best thing was the log has been weighed at 80kgs with a 12" diameter and over 2 meters long so I was happy with that...I'll keep working until I can double and triple it then work on sets!!

Tried my hand at the 135kg atlas stone, ripped hell out of my arms something chronic, but it just sat there laughing at me!

Did farmers too today, managed 100kg for 35 meters plus 1 turn then 32 meters onthe 2nd run

Did husafell carry with Robs stone, it only weighs about 70kgs, but its good for practice and cardio...lifting flat from the floor to chest then running for fast times.
I managed 60 meters in 29 seconds and Rob put in a blisteringly quick session.....120meters in 47 seconds!!!!!!!!!

I had a crack at Robs 1000lb tyre, didnt get to flip it, but on my first attempt I got it up by 2", second attempt it went about 8" and third attempt it laughed at me so Im getting there!

I havent ached like this for such a long time and now Im remembering why I enjoy training.

I weighed in at 23stone 5lbs roughly 2 weeks ago and now Im attempting to eat more protein throughout my coarse of 4-6 meals per day.

Feeling fine and looking forward to week 2

ScottDowney
09-26-2005, 07:52 AM
Right, up and out early again this morning.
I think we began the training at 08:30am

Barbell Clean & Press:
43kg x 5
53kg x 5
63kg x 5
75kg x 3
55kg x 5

All felt good and I'll be doing this more often to practice for OH press on a straight bar

Standing Karlssen style Crucifix:
Never tried these before so I started with about 25lbs for a set of 8, changed around afterwards to do some secret exercises

Medley:
Farmers Walk 100kg x 30 meters
Duckwalk 180kg x 30 meters
Husafell stone 70kg (too light) x 30 meters

Both me and Rob are getting faster on the farmers, but due to lack of training I sucked at the duckwalk and couldnt finish....only managed about 3-4 meters with the anvil!!!
I find my problem lies with trying to go too far too fast with the anvil between my legs which either pulls me forward and causes me to drop the sodding thing or smashes into the back of my legs cutting the fuck out of them so I need to get some more practice in again!

Atlas Stone:
135kg stone
Ive been trying this one for a while and still not doing good. I managed to lift it an inch off of the floor which is an inch higher than Ive ever had it. We're going to get some smaller stones cast so we can train them in full on a regular basis!!!!

All in all:
Im happy with the way the farmers are going aswell as OH bbell press I just gotta keep chipping away at it and I'll get there.

Lance Peterson
09-26-2005, 07:40 PM
Great looking workouts. Looks like you are putting in the hard work! Keep it up!

ScottDowney
09-29-2005, 12:57 AM
Thanks Lance, I'll be back deadlifting and squatting next week with any luck!!

Im hitting the grippers hard through midweek, Ive just managed to close to HG250 again, havent been able to for a while so Im now back where I left off and on schedule with the HG training.

As soon as the HG250 falls for 3-4 consecutive reps (btw: I dont rest inbetween reps) then I'll begin the attempts on the 300. Im hoping to smash the 300 by mid 2006 and smash the 400 by late 2006!!!!

Last nights grip fest:

HG250
RH: 1 full close + 4 attempts (1mm out attempt 2-4, 8mm out on attempt 5)
LH: x 5 attempts (1mm out on attempt 1-3 attempt 4&5 about 8mm out)

HG250 inverted
RH x 5 attempts
LH x 5 attempts

Ive just found that although my right hand is the strongest, my left hand has more crushing ability on the inverted closure attempts than my right.....strange that Ive never noticed that before!!

HG250
RH x 5 attempts
LH x 5 attempts

HG200 (no rest between reps)
RH x 5 x 2 (3 x full, 2 x 1mm out)
LH x 5 x 2 (3 x full, 2 x 1mm out)

HG200 Inverted (attempts)
RH x 5
LH x 5

HG150
RH x 32 (all full)
LH x 32 (slightly missed last 2 closes)
RH x 35 (all full)
LH x 35 (missed last 3)

I cant feel my hands or arms at this moment and typing is really a struggle!!!!!!!!!!!!

HG150 Inverted
RH x 20 x 2
LH x 20 x 2

HG100
RH x 50
LH x 50
RH x 30
LH x 30
I now have no feeling in my forearms, wrists, hands, fingers and Im actually typing this with the tip of my nose

HG100 Inverted
RH x 25
LH x 25 (missed last 2)

Thats it guys my arms and hands are burning, aching and numb as hell so its time to call it a day!!!

FAO Patrick McGuffin:

Been a long time lil bro, hows the grippers going??????

Patrick McGuffin
09-29-2005, 06:16 AM
they are going rather good, i have neglected them slightly but i am able to close the 250 3-4times right handed(on a good day) and i just got to where i can close it left handed, i need to train them more consistently though, i think i will do that right after i get home from school,do some pinch work as well, speaking of which i just got to where i could pinch lift 2 25's and hold it for 5-10sec, did that yesterday messin around in the weight room.

ps. not even close to the 300 :D

ScottDowney
09-29-2005, 07:16 AM
Hey Patrick, glad to hear the gripper training is going well....you're further on than me at the moment....serves me right for being a lazy A-hole

Pinch gripping is something I havent done for a long time....is that 2x25lbs or 2x25kgs????

PS: 300 is a long way off for me too bro

Patrick McGuffin
09-29-2005, 05:52 PM
2x25 kg.....ok so i was lying its only in measly pounds,i am a ways from doing kg's,a loooooooooooooong way :D

ScottDowney
09-30-2005, 03:34 AM
2x25lb plates on a pinch grip is damn good Patrick I never got much over that when I trained pinch!!!

Keep going bro, you'll be a monster soon enough

Patrick McGuffin
11-26-2005, 11:44 PM
How has you training been going??

ScottDowney
11-26-2005, 11:46 PM
Bad, terrible and worse

I havent had any transport or cash so I havent been able to get to the gym for a while......this sucks big time as Ive just had to sell my bike and I begin training again next week.

I cant stand this mess thats going down, but hey!

Thanks for asking dude, I should be back upto scratch soon...Ive bought some smelling salts ready and should be rocking my old weights in no time!!

Whats about yourself?

Patrick McGuffin
11-26-2005, 11:49 PM
Good, hitting some pretty big pr's in the weight room but its too wet outside to really hit the impliments hard otherwise I would be outside more and talking on here less :D

ScottDowney
11-26-2005, 11:52 PM
Training when its raining (Im no eminem lol) sucks at best, but what we used to do is take a small hand towel out, rip it in too and lay it over the handles so they dont get wet. Then when you're ready to hit the street with the steel, remove the towles and rub chalk down the handles to remove any excess moisture......sounds stupid but I hit a good PR last time I trained in the wet!!

Congratulations on the 500lbs by the way....Im a bit empty headed :D

Patrick McGuffin
11-26-2005, 11:58 PM
Thanks man, I will have to try that for farmers next time its nasty out, no hope for my tire though, it's sinking into my yard (lol)

ScottDowney
11-27-2005, 12:01 AM
Yeah tyre is a bit of a bitch that way out...nothing much you can do when its wet!

To stop it gathering water inside, drill 2 small holes on each apex of the axis, this way any water should run straight out!!

The only thing I can think of for the tyre is maybe cover it up when you're not using it!

After xmas Im seeing about getting a tyre with more tread on it....you cant flip mine as it has literally no grip....racing cars have more tread!

Im also hoping to build myself a loading platform out the back with concrete filled beer kegs, atlas stones (homemade) and some natural stones too...should give me something to do in the meantime

Patrick McGuffin
11-27-2005, 12:05 AM
I guess I should probably get a platform, instead of just throwing my stone onto the soggy ass ground from chest-shoulder hight :BB:

ScottDowney
11-27-2005, 12:09 AM
If you dont want to drop it onto the ground (Im full of useless information this morning) get your hands on as many potato sacks as you can...the ession sack kind and stuff one sack with as many little rolled up sacks as you can...it will be pretty compact, but pretty tough and you'll be able to drop the stone onto it without getting it wet/dirty or damaging it :D

There should be an early morning TV show with this kind of information on :M:

Patrick McGuffin
11-27-2005, 12:14 AM

Finally,

After too many disputes, interuptions, crossed words and general disrespect from people who see fit to take sides I have taken the step to going it alone.

I havent got a car as yet, but my pops has decided that he wants to shape up so hes tagging along.

Im going back to my old routine, but with a twist....

This time its business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the moment I can only get to the gym one day a week so Im doing all my work on one day

Heres how it shaped up

Deadlift
60kg x 5
100kg x 5
130kg x 3
Ready to move upto week 2

Squat
Empty x 5
40kg x 5
60kg x 5
80kg x 3
I havent done any leg work at all for more than 7 months and even then I sucked so its gonna be a long winding road, but I'll be do it

Bench Press
Empty x 10
40kg x 8
60kg x 3
Something I have done once or twice and now its time to get into it big time....weights will take some time to build up but I feel strong, precise and confident

Pulldowns
100lbs x 8
140lbs x 8
165lbs x 6
180lbs x 2
Fucking machines always labelled in lbs!

Next week I move the weight up on everything and add a set on everything

Summary
Barring my pop farting in the gym and causing a serious lack of breathable air all went well
Last time I did any deadlifting I seemed to have lost my technique (I deadlift like Benni M but a hell of a lot lighter ) but this time around everything was fine, my grip was fine (130kg not really a test LOL) my technique was good and I was precise so Im looking forward to working my way through this first cycle and see where I end up on week 7

My idea is that I will work my way through a 7 week cycle that I will try to explain:

Week One, Week Two: Light weight

Week Three, Week Four: Intermediate weight

Week Five, Week Six: Heavy Weight

Week Seven: Singles day followed by 20 rep bench, squat & deadlift increasing the weight each cycle

What Im hoping to achieve is to build my strength using the heavyweight reps (aiming to increase 10-20kgs on top reps each cycle) beat some old PRs on singles (aiming for 10-30kgs over rep weight) and use the 20 reppers to build stamina and speed on all 3 lifts and try to increase the weight used by 5-15kgs each cycle!

Does this make sense?????????????????????????????????????

Week Two

Deadlift
60kg x 5
100kg x 5
140kg x 3
110kg x 5

Squat
40kg x 5
60kg x 5
90kg x 3

Bench Press
Empty x 10
40kg x 5
70kg x 3
60kg x 6

Lat Pulldowns
140lbs x 12
160lbs x 8
160lbs x 8

Pulldowns Front
Not sure what the weight was but 3 sets of 8

Tricep Pushdowns
Half stack x 10
Full stack x 10
Full stack x 10
Dont take the piss...I was showing my pop how to do them properly ;)

After such a long layoff it feels strange coming back to training and having to use such light weights, especially on the squat!

Im just gonna keep plugging away until my weights build back up and keep on working on the reps....btw every rep on the squat is ass to the floor, every rep on the bench is chest, pause, press and every rep on the deadlift is lift, lock, drop.....no half assed crap in my training :EP:

Patrick McGuffin
12-12-2005, 12:30 AM
Great to hear you are back training!!!! I also hate coming back from not exercising, I am trying to get my pl numbrers up and started benching again and after not benching in monthes my max was at what I was able to do for 3 sets of 7 last spring, oh well after only a few weeks my strength is almost up to what it was, spend a few weeks getting used to it again and start posting some big numbers!

ScottDowney
12-12-2005, 01:40 AM
Thanks Patrick, it feels good to be aching again

All those narrow grip and wide grip lat pulldowns have taken their toll on my shoulders ;)

ScottDowney

Last year was a mad mix of screw ups whether it was people putting me down or generally making the training atmosphere a stinking pile of sh*t or me screwing up and damaging my various joints and muscles or just virus and sh*t. Either way there was one constant throughout all these interuptions...and that one thing was ME

Ive realised that its time to take care of number one and thats exactly what Im going to do this year!!

Ive decided that its time to stop messing about and get myself into a competition.....theres a serious lack of strongman equipment around me at the moment so my intentions are to join the British Powerlifting Congress and compete at the Uk Open Championship.

There is no way that I will be competetive at my bodyweight with my lifts as they are, but at least its a start.

The Uk Open Championship is being held in Brimingham on September 3rd

Competition Goals

Deadlift 600lbs
Squat 500lbs
Bench 300lbs

If I can I want to try hit these weights in competition in September

End Of Year Goals

Singles

Deadlift 638lbs
Squat 528lbs
Bench 352lbs

Reps

Deadlift 550lbs x 3
Squat 484lbs x 3
Bench 308lbs x 3

I dont know where I stand with strongman training at the moment, but If I do get the oppertunity to train with equipment without interuptions then I'll work it into my routine, but my static strength is my biggest priority at the moment.

Best of luck for 2006 mate.

Maybe so Andy, I should be either spectating or competing at the Uks Midlands Qualifiers this year, more than likely spectating though! ;)

Keep up the good work dude

Glad to hear you are back Scott!!!!!!!!!!!

Im glad to be back thanks little buddy, aching like hell this morning and I LIKE IT

Hey Scott, I just caught up with your whole thread. Looks like a lot has happened in the last six months to say the least.

aching like hell this morning and I LIKE IT

It's great to see that you're starting the new year right.......hurting while walking up the stairs and dreading the long drop down to sitting on the pot!!!

While reading through your journal it bothered me to see that you were surrounded by negativity. Some things are out of our control, ie. surroundings, circumstances, others attitudes, random injuries. Rise above all the petty crap that surrounds you and be a light to others.

Stay Strong,

Corey

P.S. The weight stacks at your gym that are labled in pounds are the only correct ones in the place!!! :M:

...but I guess powerlifting is the next best thing right-lol? Is the meet you'll be doing a raw meet or do you get to wear gear? If you can wear gear I think your squat and bench goals are a bit low. With the gear they have now you would have to have 3 guys push 300 down to your chest just to get it to touch and I'm told the squat suits are good for 500 without anyone even in them-lol! If it's raw those sound like some good goals though. If it's gear you might want to bump the squat up to at least 600 and the bench 400 possibly a lot more if you become proficient with it. The gear is THAT good!
Good Luck either way! Keep us posted!

Thanks Mike

Ive had to set my goals to be a conservative as I have always neglected squat and bench throughout my training...I shouldnt have done and Im sure regretting it now!

I think you can suit up in this competition, but Im going for it raw....Im a stubborn son of a bitch!

The only kit Im hoping to wear is knee wraps, wrist supports and maybe a belt for the squats. If I can nail a 600kg raw total I'll be satisfied, but if I nail my 636kg goal I'll be elated and for my first time out in competition!

Im hoping that I'll actually be competetive next year in the BPC, static strength is primary for me. Im hoping to hit some strongman stuff later in the year and maybe compete in SM next year....who knows though, I might get talked into doing the Uks Quals in the summer ;)

And remember to train overhead and grip so you can make an easy transition back into strongman when you are finnaly able too!!

Im still training grip as its helping with my deadlift and my forearm strength seems to be making me more stable on the bench press!

I cant do any overhead stuff at the moment, but I honestly believe that when my squat and bench press numbers raise, I should be able to jump straight back into overhead stuff. Either way I think I might start paying a visit to my mates place to use his log ;) I think I'll have to syphon some gas first hahahahahahaha

Friday 13th Grip Traning

At the moment Im not concentrating on grip goals, more maintaining and building a solid prolonged grip for heavier deadlifts, plus the muscle build up in my forearms is making my bench a lot stronger and a lot more stable!!

Sunday January 15th

Deadlift

60kg x 5
100kg x 5
140kg x 5
170kg x 3
190kg - missed (I didnt set my grip properly and it slipped, I flicked the bar up and caught it but fell over with the bar resting on the top of my left knee :D :D :D )
190kg x 1 (nailed the bastard!)
150kg x 5

Squat

Empty x 5
60kg x 5
80kg x 5
110kg x 3

My left quad started to cramp so I decided not to persue any more sets for this week!

Bench Press

Empty x 8
40kg x 6
60kg x 5
75kg x 3
55kg x 12

My left inner quad is a stiff as hell at the moment, but theres no bruising or anything like so everythings cool!

Pat 1mm away from the HG300 is awesome...the nearest Ive been is about 4mm so you're ahead of me there ;)

Looks like you are off to a good start. Are you going to train the "Big Three" lifts every session or is a split on the way?

BTW, I saw your advice about a grip specific workout day, and I may be able to work that into my schedule. Hope I get good results with it, because I am frustrated by still not closing my COC #2. So close..............

Hope the quad feels better for next time around, and be sure to stay hydrated for your workouts.

01-16-2006, 01:39 AM
Right this is the third time Ive tried to type this but for some reason if I hit the hash key, my pc shuts down....anyone got any ideas??

Im hitting the big three on the same day as a fixed routine Corey, basically I class it as prep work for the competition day....it gives me a whole load of time through the week to do what Ive gotta do and it saves money too hehehe

The biggest thing is though Ive slacked off so much for the past 2 years so now its time to hit a routine that isnt easy and stick with it....I will prevail!

In my opinion hitting the grip on a specific day is excellent, I used to train grip after strongman day (after farmers Id finish my grip off with HGs) then do a specific training day, usually wednesday!

Good luck with the CoC2

Oh no, looks like Scott has gone to the dark side and is doing "Curls for the Girls." :T:

Actually your brachialis and brachioradialis bear the brunt of the work during hammer curls. These are very funtional muscles used in moves like log cleans and rows. My brother used to tell me that lots of PL's do heavy hammer curls to help their bench as well.

Just don't start wearing pink spandex shorts........

It is really great that you recognize the strength of your girl. I am sure she really helps you through a lot. I would imagine it could be hard finding a female that truly supports your training. Let alone someone that motivates you. I find it hard to find men that understand my training. They seem to get jealous or say "you can miss one day". As soon as I hear that I am gone. Hold on to her. It sounds like she really is good for you and your training. That is great!

Sunday 22 January

A seriously shit day for me

Ive had a pain in my back through the week which decided to go fully today during my warmup sets on deadlift!

Im having some trouble walking and everything I do is painfull as hell!!

I locked out warmup rep number 4 with a mere 140kg and realised something wasnt right as I couldnt put the weight down....just stood there and had to let go!!!!

I couldnt straighten up let alone lift but Im not paying into a gym to do nothing

I tried to squat and it wasnt too bad, but going for any kind of jump in weight was definately not on the cards.

Decided Id try some bench press, as soon as I layed on the bench I knew it was a bad move, but I tried regardless.

I went for 80kg for a single and missed....I wasnt surprised, by I was surpised when I managed 75kg x 5......just a completely fucked up day in total!!!!

My only happy point was meeting up with my friend Rich and being able to sit in my comfortable drivers seat!!

This sucks

My left leg keeps going numb too...I think the swollen muscles are pressing against my siatic (sp?) nerve

Patrick McGuffin
01-22-2006, 12:09 PM
Hey Scott, have you gone to get it checked out, that seems pretty bad to me.

Ps.What kind of car did you get?

ScottDowney
01-22-2006, 01:57 PM
Its not as serious as it sounds, granted it hurts like a son of a bitch, but it will be ok in a day or two!

Bottom line is that I need to replace the mattress on my bed as its been giving me all sorts of back problems and today it finally came to a pinacle so to speak!

Im hopped up on Ibuprofen at the moment and the pain has moved to the background and Im managing to walk a bit better so hopefully all will be well shortly!!

On the car front, I bought myself a 1992 BMW 730i

Heres a wee pic of "Olly The Jagdpanther"

Patrick McGuffin

ScottDowney
01-22-2006, 02:24 PM
Hahaha luckily my moon roof is plugged into the the ol' 'lectricery

Hows those DL's coming along Pat-Man?

Corey DuCharme
01-22-2006, 02:55 PM
Sorry to hear about the back pain Scott, hope it lets up soon. It's good that you're not letting it stop you, but don't push it too hard yet. Try heating it up and doing some stretches. If you stretch it while it hurts you'll know the specific area of the problem. That way you'll know what area to keep stretching when the pain subsides. For myself, a trip to the back cracker man is worth the money in extreme situations.

Nice wheels bro. Looks great for a '92, and no more reason to skip going to the gym due to lack of transportation. Olly??

Great so far, I have started to work in 18" dls into my routine for the next contest I plan on doing in a couple of months , I got 565 pretty easily my first time going heavy on them and i am confident I will get to the high 600's to mid 700's if I work on them. Standard dl will get tested soon to see where I am at.

ScottDowney
01-23-2006, 01:40 AM
Thanks Corey...I think a trip to the back cracker is a bit overkill at the moment. The problem lies within my left hand lumbar regions due to an upset in my sleeping position. Its eased up a bit today, still a bit of pain and stiffness, but at least Im mobile! I'll take it easy today and hopefully I'll be as right as nine pense tomorrow!

I called the car Olly after my girlfriend Olivia.....and jagdpanther cos its a big german tank of a machine!!

19mpg round town aint too friendly though

Pat-Man, I used to do 18" deads myself many moons ago and they rock, so easy to get addicted!

I actually believe you should work them into your routine if you aim to compete in strongman....I find that deadlifting and partials do carry over, but you're probably better off getting used to the movement in the 18"!

Good numbers though lil buddy.....improving by the day

Im still here Corey.....been occupied recently!

Back isnt so bad now, but my left leg is still going numb every hour or so...might get it checked out!

Im hoping to be back training on the 12th of Feb all being well

Im planning on setting up a small business in the next couple of months and Ive been weighing up all the details of such...this is really exciting for me and if I managed it, it will be my first step toward achieving some personal goals!

How are things with you Corey?

Corey DuCharme
01-31-2006, 08:53 AM
Great news about your business planning. Sounds like you are working on some higher priorities instead of dinking around on the computer, good job.

If your leg is going numb, you may want to seek a chiropractor. I don't know what it's like over there, but here, going to a doctor for something like that results in nothing. A chiro on the other hand, gives you a quick adjustment and you walk out feeling great and an inch taller usually. Find a good one though, there are a lot of quacks out there.

Thanks for asking how things are going, I'm doing alright. Growing in some key areas outside of the gym, and sticking with my workouts in the gym. (basement that is ;) ) My brother has a crazy idea of starting a strongman gym, so I may be looking into that with him. They say you should never go into business with family, but I already work with him so I'm screwed anyway!

Waiting to hear about your comeback on the 12th, stay focused on your goals in the mean time.

ScottDowney
02-02-2006, 01:25 AM
Well guys heres some news

The comeback I will be making wont be a competetive one.

Ive been using my time off to do some overly needed life evalutation and Ive decided that Im not going to compete as I want to devote my time to building my business up and concentrating on that!

Im still going to be here and posting in my journal, but competing is no longer a goal for me!

Corey the idea of a strongman gym is a cracking one, I was planning on doing something similar...I say go for it!!

Sunday 5th March

Ive been set on doing something more today. My side is still a bit sore so I had to be carefull
07:30am

Axle press

Warmup 20kg alternating front & back press' x 20

Working set

60kg x 5 (easy feeling quite good)

2" Grip Deadlift
100kgs x 6

Not a working set or anything, I just wanted to see if I could still get the movement down without any pulls or strains. Im gonna hit it full time this weekend!

Lightweight Husafell Stone (from floor)

75kg x 10meters (carrying it outside for training partner )

Farmers Walk

100kg x 20 meters (about 14 seconds)

I actually shocked myself as I managed to grab our 180kg anvil and lift it to an upright position without a problem!!!! Well pleased with that

Deadlift Hold (rotating side-handles a real bitch!!)
60kg x 35 seconds
100kg x 17.4 seconds

With the way we have this set up, the weight on the bar is easily double due to the rolling handles!!

That was it for the day

Im looking forward to getting some more training in and Im glad that Im able to shift some weight after being out for so long.

The pain in my back has susbsided and the numbness in my leg is minimal, but the pain down my side is with me all day every day, but hopefully it wont cause too much of a problem with training!!

07:30am

Log Press (12.5") 80kg
1x1
1x2

Pretty pleased with this despite the low reps as I havent used the log in over 5 months and the only overhead work Ive done is last weeks piss about with the axle!

Im going to be alternating between log and axle so that I get a good grasp of both disciplines

Farmers Walk

No warmup today

100kg x 45 meters w/1 turn - 22.93 seconds

This absolutely devastated my grip so I didnt get to deadlift, but we might be going back up a little bit later so I might hit some shoulder work and some deadlifting too

Corey DuCharme
03-12-2006, 01:45 PM
Rotating between log and axle presses will keep things interesting too. It will give you some well rounded shoulder strength. Right now I am getting a little burned out on straight overhead press with a BB. It will be nice to have some variety.

Rob my buddy is getting insanely fast on the log....I mean he's already nailed some damn fine and very VERY respectable weights on the log & axle (weights that would place high in an english pro comp!) and is damned talented on the overhead stuff.

Trying to take pictures of him pressing the log or axle is a fucking nightmare, Ive taken some pics that are perfectly in focus but hes a blur.

Hes getting awesomely fast on the medleys too, the next few weeks should be interesting as hes finally getting loading pins welded onto the farmers which means he can aim for more weight at higher speed!

Had to do a little Jesse Marunde style celebration after managing to press the log :M:

You need a log Corey

I used to do nothing but BB press and the novelty really begins to wear off without a log or axle

Im pretty happy that things seem to be coming back together after all the bullshit from last year so Im hoping progress comes back soon (I miss you old friend hahahaha)

Corey DuCharme

Those are sweet videos Scott. Wish I could come train with you guys there, you have a nice setup and good motivational skills: "Lift that 'bleeper' you 'bleeping' 'bleeper.'" :KD: Your side still hurts because you did that funny little dance with a log over your head. :B:

Man, your boy Rob is a machine. His log presses are so smooth and fast and I liked his stance on the atlas stone. I think the narrow stance with flared knees would favor my build, plus there is no shuffling around to lap it.

Train hard and keep it positive, even if it means doing a funny little "Marunde" dance.

I used to do nothing but BB press and the novelty really begins to wear off without a log or axle

I want to get both of them this summer. What is the difference between pressing an axle and a BB? Oh yeah, the font used in your video intro is cool, what is it called?

ScottDowney
03-14-2006, 05:09 AM
Anytime you're in the Uk Corey just look us up....everybodies welcome to train with us from time to time!!

Robs motivational skills are second to none....when I was doing the farmers he said he was contemplating kicking my up the butt to get me moving faster!

Rob and I work well together as a team, always have and when it comes to motivating each other, it becomes really intense :F:

Rob is absolutely destroying overhead pressing these days, I cant wait to see how he does at this years regional quals

The difference I find between axle and bb is that the axle we use doesnt rotate and it has a 2.5" grip which is quite taxing

I actually prefer pressing an axle over barbells for some reason :BB:

You're gonna love having a log Corey, especially if you get a big sucker...12-13" diamter is so much fun

I think the font is called Abbadon

If you look closely in the videos, you will see that we couldnt get any of the strongman stuff out today as theres a bit of building work going down in the powerhouse this week and all the crap is in the way (a couple of tons of crap) so we stuck to axle and I added some incline narrowgrip bench, a quick single set of deadlifting (mainly fucking about) and some squats too

My side was a bit stiff this morning so I did some stretching exercises with a broom handle accross my shoulders, worked wonders!!

Axle Press
Empty Barbell (23kgs) x 10

1st Warmup (off camera)
40kg x 8

67.5kgs x 5
77.5kgs x 3

2" Grip Deadlift
1x140kgs

Narrow Grip incline Benchpress (with 2" axle)
32.5kgs x 10 Warmup
52.kgs x 8
72.5kgs x 3

Squats
63kgs x 5
103kgs x 5
143kgs x 0 (weight felt comfortable, but not enough power from the hole!!)
123kgs x 2

I like the feel of these, Im going to try and work them in to my routine!

I felt stable on the axle today and found myself with a little more leg drive and speed on the press, still not as fast as I would like, but will improve with time

I also felt pretty strong, the press' didnt seem like much of a problem...I could do with learning how to be more explosive in the clean especially when the weight increases

Im still about

I usually train every sunday morning

Last week I trained deadlifts on friday:

Friday March 24th

Deadlift:

63kg x 6
103kg x 5
143kg x 5
178kg x 3
198kg x 1
215kg x 0

On Saturday I helped my buddy move a lot of gym equipment about and twisted my back AGAIN while turning to the left to throw a 165lb dumbell out of the way (tight space, no option)

As a result I couldnt train on Sunday (couldnt walk when I woke up), but everything seems to be getting better quickly so I'll be hitting the weights again on Sunday

"Scott~
Was it too much? Still aching?"

Nah I like training high volume in one session...it hurts more and for longer, but I like it!!!!

The deadlifts are conventional

SWEEEEET!!! Strength is coming back to you and growing to new levels!! Keep rolling with it, and train smart.

BTW, 213kgs is around 470lbs for those that don't know. Man, I can hear Rob yelling at you, "C'mon, pull that #@$#er, pull!!"

ScottDowney
04-01-2006, 11:24 AM
Thanks Corey

Rob sure is the motivational type aint he?

I have a little bit of inspiration behind this new fire....I watched some old training clips of me at an old gym trying for 220kgs on the deadlift and due to poor technique, I didnt nail it, but the speed with which that sucker flew upto my knees was immense and it annoyed me....it made me really angry!

I began thinking "Its time for 220kg to fall, Im gonna nail that by hook or by crook" and thanks to that old footage, Im only 7kg away from busting it and only 17kg away from 500lbs....Im gonna fight like mad now, injury or no injury

ScottDowney
04-04-2006, 09:00 AM
My back isnt too bad, its ok when deadlifting and I dont feel much, but its shite when Im doing overhead so I gots to be careful with that!!

We trained on Sunday, I just havent got around to cutting the vids down yet, but I think mine went something like this

OH Warmup
Empty bb x 10
32kg x 10
52kg x 5
72kg x 1
88kg x 0 (Couldnt get any power into the press!)
77kg x 4

Same weight as I did previously, but with one more rep and each rep was stronger and faster with no messing about so progress is there!!

Ive decided to bring down me old "core" ball (Im not calling it a gym ball 'cos thats soooo gay ) to work on core

Only small sets at the moment as my body isnt used to it....

"Core" ball crunchs (ala Sylvester Stallone)
1x10 perfect form

Man these suckers hurt...I tried to sit up in bed last night and couldnt move!!!

Elevated coreball push ups
1x10
1x5

These feel good, but the damned ball wont stay still. I think I need some more air in it

Yeah baby yeaaaaaahhhhhh

tonight my friends, 218kg fell

Awesome

I had a confrontation with someone I dont like (he dont like me) in the main gym area and without throwing a single clinched fist, I told him exactley what he is (infront of 6 people no less) and walked away a happy man

Then we began deadlifting

Deadlift:
63kg x 5
103kg x 5
143kg x 5
163kg x 1
183kg x 1
218kg x 1 PR
188kg x 3
163kg x 5

218kgs is curled up in a corner crying itself to sleep as we speak!!!! Good job Scott. Hey, way to control yourself with the bonehead you had a confrontation with. Anger is a powerful emotion that can tear a man up. Getting control over it and properly expressing it can save your life.

ScottDowney

Thanks Corey....Im proud of 218kg, thats only 3 weeks after my 2nd back injury too :) wooooohooooo

Im proud of not getting into a fight too....the guys a turd man, and without revealing too much...had his way with a girl younger than the age of consent....this in my book (seing as he only wanted sex) makes him a pervert/peadeophille whatever you wanna call it.

He used to be someone I spoke to, but Ive never got on with the guy as he is the biggest, most manipulative tool I have ever known and hes caused me to be banned from a couple of gyms just because of him flapping his gums at the residents.

I am tempted to drop the guy, but its not worth it and I dont like violence so I let him (and everyone else) know exactly what I though....odds on I'll have to apologise to the gym owner, but thats no problem!

Self control and a PR...man, Im on fire :BB:

Patrick McGuffin

Awesome job Scott, the 500 lb mark will soon fall!! Well more like 499.4 or 501.6 or something like that but still a huge accomplishment!! And having the control to not resort to violence, I would have hit him. :EP:

ScottDowney
04-08-2006, 12:37 AM
I would have hit him. :EP:

Hahahahahahahaha

Nice one Patrick

If he was a straight player I probably would clock him away from the gym, but hes not...hes sneaky would probably report me to the Police and have me locked up...which isnt too good for my training

That is how a MAN handles things! Awesome!

Nice PR too, man. Start doing explosive jumps, 10 sets of triples once a week and your deadlift will go up a lot faster still.

Hey thanks Dan...would you have handled it the same way or laid a viking smack down on the punk?

Explosive jumps? You mean deadlift style, but jump towards the top?

Sounds intersting ;)

Sick video! We are brothers of DRAGONFORCE.

I usually let a LOT of crap slide off my back from idiots, but if I make a conscious decision to, I will flip out and probably scare his face off. I used to flip out a lot, throw couches and punch holes in walls...I'd like to think I've grown past that, but I yam what I yam.

Yes, deadlift style...here's a great link I always refer people to: Good link (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/forumfun/misc9.jpg)

But here's an even better one on plyos: Plyometrics (http://www.joshstrength.com/test/plyometrics2.htm)

I used to do the same thing...punching holes through walls and generally doing shit that hurt no-one but myself....its a phase most people go through.

Im civilised now, if someone messes with me I just turn their car on its roof and start it spinning

Im just having a look at the plyo link........

the other link had me pissing myself laughin :BB:

Glad you spotted my edited version of Dragonforces "Through The Fire And Flames"

Rob actually noticed that I made quite the fuck up with my maths the week before last....I thought I had nailed 213kg for a single at the end....I miss loaded. It was actually 208kg which was still a PR for me at the time. It does nothing but make this weeks PR all the more impressive to me, because I thought I made a little jump of 5kg on my top set...well it turned out my increase was actually 10kgs so thats made me smile a bit

Hit the strongman events today and things went smoothly

Front Press (warmup)
20kg x 15
40kg x 8
60kg x 3

Log Press:
Empty log (80kg) x 3
82.5kg x 2
85kg x 1 (I think...Im not sure if we put 2.5kg per side or 5kg I'll find out later)

Farmers Walk: (new loading pins welded on, now weigh 105kg empty)
105kg x 25 meters 13.98 seconds
115kg x 25 meters 12.59 seconds
120kg x 25 meters 13.03 seconds
140kg x 0 Managed to lift about 3" but I think I burned out.
105kg x 30 meters (took them down the course and back into the House Of Pain)

Im quite happy with today..Ive done more sets on the log as I desperately need to get used to it once more, but things were a bit better today!

The farmers walk was big fun....Ive never gone anything over 105kg before and I only managed a couple of steps so hitting 115kg & 120kg for 25 meters each time made me real happy.
I think I can go a lot faster with different boots on...the ones I had on today are my old hiking boots and they're a little........fucked! I'll give this a try next week

I wasnt upset that I didnt get the 140kg, but I will in a few weeks!!!!!!

Prodigy still gets my heart pumping. Great video for me to watch as I head down for a workout.

You're coming along nicely in all your efforts. I envy your ability to get under the log and muscle it up. After a couple of months of pulling like that, you'll be a deadlifting machine too. Don't forget to bring your hips through when the bar passes your knees. Towards the end, as you tired, you're using that big old back of yours just a bit much. It's by no means ugly, just a thought to consider.

Keep training hard you big YETI!!!!!

I`ll give you a small tip to improve your log press - start working your triceps hard , you have very long arms your going to need strong triceps!

Yeah I definintely need to put that into practice....I find it hard to get more leg drive into the pull because Im tall....I need to start off with my shoulders further behind the bar too, maybe I could get more hips in that-a-way?

Keep up the good work Scot!

My first problem with the log is that I have barely used it this year and as a result, Im not too stable with it...as soon as I get comfortable with it again and be able to lower it properly without it bodyslamming my chest, then I can get start adding more reps and sets into the mix and really give my tri's a good ass kicking.

Sunday April 16th
06:00

Felt like shite this morning, didnt sleep well, upset stomach, got the shits, puked out of my window...not the best start.

I was too busy running too and from the toilet so I didnt get the chance to have a coffee (I never eat before training on Sunday Mornings, just drink 1 coffee)

Im cycling back the weight on all my lifts...I dont wanna burn out too quickly after coming back and I dont want to get greedy on my gains either so its back to working through a 6 weeks cycle again!

Thickbar Deadlift (replacing normal bar DL for 3 weeks)
52.5kg x 5
92.5kg x 5
112.5kg x 5

I forgot to add more weight due to the axle being slightly lighter...rectify next week. :BB:

Didnt feel good on the DL...I nearly shat my pants at least 3 times...stomach isnt too good today but who cares...skidmarks are a mark of victory

Axle Press
Empty axle (12.5kgs) x 15
62kg x 8 (easy, fast, precise, no messing about. Im concentrating on power and technique for 3 weeks)
72kg x 6 (again easy, fast and precise. Felt my wrist 'pop' on the clean so left it there!)

Farmers Walk
105kg x 25 meters (no official time, but around 12 seconds)
110kg x 25 meters (no official time, but aroung 11 seconds)
115kg x 23 meters (lost my direction half way and tried to straighten up..heard something crack in my neck so continued upto what I thought was 25m but I was 2 meters short! Neck hurts like billy be frigged but Im ok)

Partial Deadlift (just below knee)
20kg (empty bar) x 5
Didnt feel good at all, neck has all but seized up at this point and hurts to lift, look up or turn right!! 2 ibuprofens later
120kg x 5
220kg x 3 too easy bring on some weight ya bastards
320kg attempt - Broke about 3" of light underneath, but not today! Made me hungry for it though so 320kg will fall in no time!

On a motivational note, Ive found a song that for some reasons fires me up beyond belief while training

Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer

When this came on I started beating Rob with my DL straps and kicking his ass to rep 320kg on the partial DLS.......RRRRRROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR (or should that be WHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA WE'RE HALF WAY THERE)

Wow, I'm doing something right then!!

Way to workout in spite of feeling crappy. (Literally) To top that off, you hurt your neck and kept on going. TANK!!! Man, I feel your pain. My neck seized up on me last week. Almost as bad as the pain is walking around like a goofy zombie all contorted and stiff.

It just comes down to this, "You gotta' hold on to what you got, we've got each other and that's a lot......."

Hey Corey, my apologies for not posting for a few weeks

As you read in my last entry I heard something crack and felt severe pain in my neck the last time I did the farmers walk

Ive been hoping that the pain would go away and the normal schedule would resume, but unfortunately not!

The majority of the pain in my shoulder has gone, although lifting heavy objects still causes some serious discomfort, but my neck is the main issue

I was hoping it would heal up and settle down, but no such luck. Im still stuck with pain all day every day. Pain killers arent doing shit :(

It partly feels muscular and partly doesent...from describing the sensation, some people think I may have damaged a vertabrae slightly

I hate doctors and never go (havent been in over 3 years) but I may have to submit and go for a look....the doctors and hospitals over here are a goddamn joke...the last time I was in hospital I had a 8" gash down my head (you could see my skull) and was loosing blood pretty rapidly...I went to the hospital and sat in the waiting room for damn near 3 hours!!

Anyway, no training for the time being as obviously, anytime I lift something remotely heavy it goes again so Im sat here getting thin and not enjoying it either

On the upside, this time away from training has given me some time to work on my photographic skills and work on my artisti shots, which makes me hella happy...I love photography in all aspects :)

My home page (http://www.putfile.com/jagdpanthere32)
Check it out

Im gonna have a look at your progress now Corey and see how things are doing :D

Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers brother...

Pain in the neck, ouch. Well, it's a blessing in disguise, so you can pursue other interests. Maybe you could keep active with the dreaded, dumm dummm daaaah, c-word. (cardio  )

Stupid doctors and hospitals. Hope you find the best one on the island and you get back to it very soon. At least I can focus my prayers more now, knowing what is going on.

Patrick McGuffin

That sucks about your neck and the cruddy hospitals there, I am another one of those people who dont like to go to the doctors, I have only been there twice since I was 11, once for a broken arm and once because I was having eccessive nose bleeds when I was 14. Have you seen a chiropractor yet? They might find a solution for you. Anyways I do think it kinda a mixed blessing, I really like your photography, great use of focus and lighting plus the angles are sweet :)

ScottDowney
05-14-2006, 12:49 AM
Thanks dude...glad to see my photography goes down well ;)

Its life decision time:

Im fully aware that this neck thing isnt the worst thing that could happen (many people have come back from worse injuries, like Nicolette for example) but this injury has made me think.

Everytime I go through my training I begin to enjoy it and bang...another injury

Along with injuries there are also people that make training impossible, but I wont go into that right now!

Anyway, the pain in my neck (def vertabrae) is not a pain that will be going away...its gonna be one of those niggling things I learn to put up with and I have no problem with that.

I have lost no movement in my shoulder, but I have lost a ridiculous amount of power through this

I wasnt aiming to compete full time or professional or anything, Im simply not good enough for that nor do I have the proper dedication....I look at some of you guys in complete awe and amazement at the amount of dedication you lot have.

As I was saying, I dont intend on competing as a professional and now my neck isnt right, Im feeling that this is the straw that broke the camels back and its time to move on.

I will start training again (dont know when) but it wont be for strength, it will be merely to keep myself moving...I cant give up training, but I can give up training for strongman!

In honesty it has scared me and Im not thinking about myself, but about my lovely fiancee'

Im going to focus fully on business now as I have a few ideas I could put into motion this year and I think its a good time to move onto that project
