World Strongman Cup: Iran Stage Cancelled by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2007 IronMind

Things had started off well, but when two Iranian young women asked Arild Haugen to lift them, that was the beginning of the end of this weekend’s World Strongman Cup competition.

Any idea what "rule" or "law" was broken to merit the arrests?

the women acted like human beings.

Then they had the audacity to interact with a man who they weren't related or married to.

Sad comment on the state of affairs Iran and others countrys. I am sure they were the Islamic religous ploice who are responsible for enforcing things like female dress code and such.

I totally feel you guys and it sucks sometimes, but regardless, you really need to be aware and respectful of local culture/customs whilst abroad. Dealt with it all the time in the Army.

There comes a time when you have to judge the behavior and not just excuse it as 'multiculturalism'. NOt saying that you don't have a point (you do make a very good one), just saying that being aware of and acting in accordance of a bigoted local custom is a pragmatic matter. But there is no reason to give respect to the male chauvinistic and barbaric practices of their cultures.

It may suck and they may be bigots, but they were in Iran and in Iran that was not the way to conduct themselves. If the Iranians were to come to America we would expect them to act accordingly. I certainly don't agree with what happened, but that is their culture and if we happen to be in Iran than we need to do as the Iranians do. Isn't that the saying "when in Iran..."? The athletes should have had a pre-briefing on how to conduct themselves before they left their own countries.

One more reason to say 'God Bless America'

I can kind of see why the arrest happened though, because they are so strict as far as women's rights, and they porbably think it is disgraceful for a woman to picked up, especially by a complete stranger.

And you will be taken off the airplane, arrested, and spend alot of time in Iranian custody. Piss on their flag here and you are covered... there are no rules over there... TRUST ME.

its hard to check these numbers when you pull them directly out of your :T: . The point you make is right on though. It is possible over there . Crazy friggin world. This could have done good things for Iran. But they messed it up.

I'm all about respecting other cultures, but I think it's kinda nuts to enforce odd laws like that on foreigners (which, to Iran's credit, they didn't do - they left Haugen alone). I could see if he'd been practicing his midnight move at noon in a public square, as that is behavior one would expect to be against the rules.

Kind of reminds me of that kid who was caned in Singapore however long ago it was. I think he deserved it - vandalism is illegal pretty much everywhere. Had he been busted for violating Singapore's ban on gum chewing, I could see trying to intervene.

That said, I think Sharia law is insane and I don't understand why anyone would want to live in Iran.

Yeah......... I'll go ahead and assume you're joking. But seriously, Iran isn't really a great place for women and it sucks that this happened. So what's going on with Svend's protege these days, anyways? He really impressed me in WSM '06.

We are whisker away from a conflict with Iran... this is not a joking matter. IF you traveled to the Middle east lately you would have to mind your P's and Q's... They really don't give a crap how much you can press over head. No one is Superhuman.

I can't see why anyone from another, non-muslim country would want to promote a contest in Iran anyway. Their leader has made very inflammatory and warlike statements against the US. (I know...Arild is not an American. But he isn't an arab either.) Many arabs do not care for westerners (even Europeans) being in their country anyway, especially after this Iraq war debacle. Every country that has gone in with the US on this war has become a potential enemy of the fanatics over there. Why take a chance on getting one of your athletes, judges, fans, etc., arrested, beheaded, kidnapped, tortured, etc?

The free market should dictate here. Only hold international competitions in peaceful, safe, stable countries where the competitors and crowd alike can enjoy themselves without worrying about some religious police or fanatical nuts coming out and causing trouble, and where people have a reasonable expectation of safety and staying out of trouble. This type of thing never happens in Iceland, or the Bahamas, or China, or even in the more peaceful locations in Africa where they have held WSM events in the past.

I would just scratch Iran (and most of the middle east) off the list...permanently, or at least until they can get their act together. Athletic events bring tourist dollars to the local economy. This can only be a good thing. Many countries get a large percentage of their income from tourism. If countries cannot "behave themselves", then tourists (and athletic event promoters) should just stay away, and let that country suffer the economic consequences of living in the stone ages if they want to.

Africa peaceful???

They told the athletes to stay indoors at night at the WSM's that held place there. The Rebels in that country are downright savage.

Africa's a continent :IMHO:

There are a number of African countries where they like America and Western Europe just fine, Ghana for one. Just keep a few fives in your wallet to bribe the police when you speed.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. I mean Africa is a continent with a lot of countries. Some you wouldn't want to go to, but some are stable and peaceful. I guess to "sum up" my point in my post better, why in the world would promoters WANT to have a contest in a country with known crazy laws (sharia), or crazy people (terrorists and / or revolutionaries), that can cause trouble, when they have (I think) 216 countries in the world to choose from. Surely the majority of those 216 countries are peaceful places to hold contests and do business. Why go to the troublesome ones at all? Then the peaceful ones should prosper and make more tourism dollars, and the war torn ones and the ones with crazy people and crazy laws can just sit there and rot in the stone ages until they prove they can get their act together and deserve to host international athletic events. That was my point.

Truthfully, the only place in Africa I'd think of holding a contest is in Madagascar or Mauritius, maybe Egypt.
