Just thought I would introduce myself. My name is David. I'm a firefighter, cartographer, and renewed weightlifting junkie. :) In high school I was on the weightlifting team. We participated in the BFS (Bigger Faster Stronger) program. My senior year I dead lifted 505lbs. with a BW of 185. I was very proud of that. After high school I had plans of joining the army. Instead I fell in love and got married. So, I stopped working out. (no access to a gym) In Oct. 2006 I got a good deal on two benches, a squat rack, a few (standard) bars, and 300 lbs. of standard weights. My father in law gave me the the bulk of his weights (we used to workout together till I passed him up, and he moved out of town). I've been working out alot and lost 20 lbs. Now I'm working on getting my strength back. I did some research online and that led me to here. I just found out today that there is a strongman competition not 30 minutes from my house once a year. This year its in June. I doubt I could get to where I wouldn't ebarrass myself in the next 2 1/2 months. So hopefully next year. Also, about an hour away there is some Scottish Highland Games that I'm stoked about. I joined this forum acouple of days ago but didn't check my bulk mailbox for the registration email. :BB:
This looks like an awesome place.........oh yeah, Jesse RULES!!!! :D
So,....uh.....thats a little about myself. :)

Good to have you David. Look up the kcstrongman guys in your area. They are a great group of guys and you could do some event training with them.

even if you think you would embarrass yourself at the competition, do it anyways! I was in the same position as you....got back into weightlifting, found out about a local competition nearby, and made it my goal to enter. Let me tell you - I learned more in one afternoon competing than i did in all the months leading up to it. Although I didn't do terribly well, I had a blast. The other competitors were friendly and gave me tons of advice.
And oh yeah...welcome to the boards!

Ok, that does it. If there are still any spots left open I'll compete. :) I'll have to talk to my wife about it first. :D

David,
there are three meets pretty close to you. Kansas Strongest Man May, Salina, KS & Gus Lohman Challenge in June, Cameron, MO & Nebraska's Strongest Man July, Papillion, NE. There are spots left in all of them so far.
Like it was said, just sign up and compete and go from there. We all had to start somewhere.
Anyway, defintiely get ahold of the guys at kcstrongman.

Salina, KS is about 3 1/2 hours from me. Papillion, NE is not too far but I have a baby due in the beginning of July. So, I doubt I would be able to make that one. The one in Cameron is the one I'll be most interested in this year. Its only like 30 minutes from so its the easiest to get to. After that only I'll see where it goes. :) Thanks for the info. The one in Papillion would be awesome next year. We could just stay the night up there and go the zoo the day after the competition. :)

Yeah, we will be having it next year also, around the same time. Definitely make it to Cameron if you can. It is a great meet for a great cause. I will be down there to help out so I will probably meet up with you.

Welcome David! Great to have you here, like it has been said sign up jump right in, use the contest as motivation. I did, I signed up for th eIowa contest and then started to train. I might get my butt handed to me but its going to be a blast and a great learning experance. Good luck at the highland games and be sure to keep us updated on you progress.

Welcome David ! Good job getting yourself back into it....Keep a training journal...and I would incorporate as many things into your training that parallel your firefighter physical duties...Just my .25 worth ! Be Safe - Train smart and hard-Shawn
