View Full Version : Filling Kegs? (weights over 200 lbs)

We are putting on a contest in June involving a keg carry as a part of a medley and wondering what everyone out there is doing to make those real heavy kegs?

I have a couple with water that are 160-170, and sand filled is right around 220-230 lbs I believe. Looking at trying to make one that is about 280-300 lbs for the HW guys to carry and maybe a 250 for the LW...

Anyone try putting those lead tire weights that are used to balance tires inside the kegs? Or fill them with gravel? Concrete? Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Keg is almost exactly 2 cubic feet and generally weigh around 35 lbs empty.

Various items and densities you could commonly use to fill one are as follows:

Water @ 64 lbs/cubic foot
Sand @ 100 lbs/cubic foot
Mortar mix @ 130 lbs/cubic foot
Concrete @150 lbs/cubic foot

IMO, if you want a keg in the high 200's, i would remove the valve, pour in dry mortar mix, and add water inside the keg. Take a small piece of rebar and do a half assed job of mixing it. Much easier than trying to pour wet mix down that small hole and lots cleaner.

I used old tire weights(got them free) and a bunch of railroad spikes(just walk a railroad and they will be lying around).

Used a big game scale to weigh it.

Just don't get caught on the bridge down there in georgia. You'll be like Vern in Stand By Me

Tire weights work well...we have one that is around 420...

I could make one heavier if i wanted...but why would i do that?

I tried like hell to get tire weights but every place I went they said they sell them for .50 a pound to guys that melt them into fishing weights. Stupid fisherman. Our 275 keg is full of sand.

Tom, I have two good friends that have tire shops, I can see if they do anything with the used weights when they change tires..maybe I can get them from there?
