Hey I'm new to this and looking for a place to train in Northwest Florida. I'm in the Panama City area now. Would like to find someone who has some impliments before I go to my first competition on the 14th of Apr. If not maybe someone close who would be willing to split the cost of equipment.

Welcome Jake!

Like I said on the Anvil...I know it's a bit of a drive, but you're always welcome in Gainesville.

I appriciate it. You said there were some guys from Tally here so I thought I would try my luck...getting close to comp time though. I may just have to break down and buy everything for myself...don't know if I have room at the house for it all!

you don't absolutely need the equipment. I compete at the pro level and only have a farmers and a yoke, both made by Pitbull Equip :D , and I do what ever I can with that and I do fine. Use the comp as a training day.

That's a good idea, I just wanted to try things like the stones before I get there and look like a jackass cause I don't know how to pick them up. Or look like that WSW competitor from Canada, Filuex, I think. Every time he picks something up he looks at it likes its rocket science! Trying not to be that guys. By the way how do you train for stones with out them?

You can't. Unless you have several hundred dollars worth of stones, you are hopeless and should by no means try to do them in public. :T:

Put one 45 on one end of a barbell. Put 3 or 4 or however many on the other end, and practice lifting the end with multiple weights. It's not a bad approximation, just make sure the plates are tight so you don't pinch the #$#@!! out of your forearms.

Oh...and Dominic Filiou is a WSM competitor. I mean, yeah he didn't do that well last year, but to question his manhood...that's pretty low. :)

I don't train them. I just wing it. With the yoke though I can do squatting, pressing, conans carries, and yoke walking. The farmers are good for deads and walking. You just have to be creative.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't questioning his manhood, just his level of intelligence. The man just looks confused all the time. I mean he is HUGE and has to be rediculously strong, but anytime he competes he just looks lost. I don't want to look lost. I don't think I will change the work out I'm doing now, just too close to comp time and I don't think that the change will yeild much in results. So after the comp I will see what needs work and fix it. Pretty sure I'm just going to have to work on over all strength, I'm just hoping to be competitive in my weight class 231-265. I'm 245ish now and at 6'3" probably undersized.

I just wanted to say Good Luck on your up and coming contest man. As for Filou, he is a monster at 6'5 400 pounds, i just wish he showed more heart. With that size he could dominate.

That's what I was saying, just doesn't seem to be all there....wonder how he trains?

Honestly in my opionion, i just don't think he has the dedication of some of the other men that compete. I mean i am not insulting him in any way, but i would love to see him use that size. I mean you could invade countries with that man alone.

No lie the man is a FREAK! If he just believed in himself then I think he could be a force of nature. I mean how do you get that big but not be able to sling around the same weight as the MUCH smaller guys?

I mean no doubt size isn't everything, but at that size i agree. I remember last year in the overhead stone lift. He had the 1st or 2nd 1 at his chest, and then looked at it like it had a head. I even remember the announcers saying Filou should easily dominate this lift.

That is the exact look I was talking about...I watched closely after that and it seemed that he had that look for everything...maybe it's just my impression.

Welcome and good luck! This board has helped me a great deal with my throwing for highland games and is the best for the straight talk about strength sports.

Hey Stephan, I am actually in Apalachicola so you are right down the street from me. I have a strongman coming up in Apr but after that maybe there could be a way we could train together, if you don't already have a partner. Just looking for somebody with the same kind of goals.

Tim Myrick, Wakulla County, near Tallahassee, reporting in.

Only implement I have is a log, but now that I am not traveling for work, I intend to make more and get back to lifting.

Man it's good to hear that there are guys into this so close by...maybe we can get together.

Getting together is most cool...Not sure just when or where or what implements we can use but we can definitely give it a try.

Sounds like we may have to make a plan. The only thing I have right now is an empty Keg that I need to fill with either water or sand...don't know which would be better a heavier weight or the balance issues of water.

I'm from around the Tallahassee area, we all need to get together around here one of these days. I've got an axle and 400 someodd pounds of plates for equipment

As soon as i can find the time I will get my practice field finished and we can have a get together there with a BBQ for the other family members if you have them and want to bring them. Unfortunate I have two games this month and i have just started 3 new projects at work. so my spare time is very small, but i will see what i can do.

Wes, good to hear from you. I've got Duniden games this week-end. I will let you know how i do.
