I'll be in Ann Arbor MI from late June through late July. Is there anyone near there? I won't have a car, so it'd have to be close (or reachable by public transport from the university).

If not, anybody know of any good (and cheap!) gyms? Or somewhere I might find a few heavy rocks?

Hi-

We live in Ann Arbor right now, but are moving in a week to New Zealand for the summer. My husband trains with Jared Spybrook, who lives in Warren, which is about an hour away (I know he is on here too, so hopefully he will jump in). Jared has everything strongman wise, and he and his wife, Dana, are some of my favorite people to be around. People train with him every Sunday.

In terms of local gyms, the University of Michigan actually has a couple of nice facilities. My husband and I used to train there and they were okay with all kinds of "weird" weightlifting behavior (e.g., snatches, clean and press, zercher squats, etc.). Central campus has the best gym. Dexter, which is a town beside Ann Arbor (and I think public transport goes to) has a gym that a bunch of powerlifters train at. Ann Arbor also has a chain of Champions that I think are okay as well. No stones though (However, I actually taught a student who was on the football team and he said they actually do have some farmers walk apparatus and sleds, but it is in the athlete's private gym that is not open to the public.)

Anyhow, I am not sure if I can be of much help since we are moving, but I would be happy to give you tips about the town and tell you about the local gyms. The public transportation in Ann Arbor is really good, so you can get around fairly well (and if you are affiliated with the University-- i.e., have a student ID it is free too). Anyhow, let me know if I can give you any tips or help you out at all information-wise.

Brianna

Thanks.

Jared wouldn't kill me with 8000 pound farmers walks, though, would he? :)
