Just did a nathan's hot dog eating qualifier along with Mike Landrich from this board. Those hot dogs were brutal. I ate 12 in the first 6 minutes or so, going along fine, and suddenly the dogs got to my brain and wouldn't let me eat any more. So by the end, I only ate 14. Wasn't full, just really disgusted at the meat and soggy buns. Mike did very well for his first try, also getting 14. I am convinced he can get 20 next time around. Good job Mike; it was nice meeting you. Try not to post too many incriminating pictures of me.

On the upside, I did well at a deep fried asparagus contest a few days before, getting 3rd place and 250 bucks (3.75 pounds in 10 minutes).

Then, two days after hot dogs, I did my very first powerlifting competition. So I thought I'd post how it went, since there was a topic here on this board about me asking for tips a little while ago.

Was in 198 weight class (barely due to all the eating). Here's how it went down, converted from kg to nearest pound:
1) Squat - 1st: 225, 2nd: 260 failed, 3rd: 276
Failed the 2nd squat because I went up too fast and lost balance forward. I calmed down on 3rd attempt and did it easy, though I got one red light for supposedly not going deep enough (though 2 white lights so it counted). I've squated more in gym, but not by a whole lot, so I was okay with this.
2) Bench - 1st: 195, 2nd: 220, 3rd: 236
Sadly enough, 236 is a personal record for me on bench. So there's one PR. It was actually an incredibly slow press. I got a lot of praise from people for not giving up and making the lift. Me no like benching.
3) Deadlift - 1st: 360, 2nd: 400, 3rd: 430
Gym PR on dead is only 405, so that's 25 pounds more. 430 didn't feel difficult, went up pretty quick. I think the good knurling on the bar and the olympic plates made this lift much easier than in my gym. I'm very happy with this lift, but I can't help wonder how much more I could have done. Hmmm; how long until 500.

So my deadlift is progressing nicely. My squat and bench still suck of course, but I'll keep plugging away and hopefully have those catch up. Thanks all for the advice you gave me.

Thanks! BTW, I just saw your post about the squat accident on scarred and I also caught that show. The part they didn't talk about that I am curious about is, is he ever going to be able to squat again?

He will probably be able to squat, but Bacher is now working alot on his bench and upper body in general with only physical therapy for the lower body. He keeps a training log over on Steve Pulcinella's forum, www.ironsport.com

no problem, I hope he does as I am pulling for him.

Cool; I'm glad to hear he's not giving up on lower body lifting. At least he can get a really sweet bench while he's waiting. I just hope he doesn't get too anxious and squat too heavy again before his body is ready. It's inspirational that it didn't sway him from doing what he loves. If I had an injury that bad, I can't say whether I'd try to squat again. . .
