He is a wrestler. Last season was his first and he is a freshman. This kid is a freakin monster. He scored at least 11 points on every opponent he faced and also scored a 3 point near fall on everybody too, including the European champ. His problem was his conditioning. He would destroy these kids and then get tired and get pinned. His dad works with me and came to me asking to make him stronger and get him in better shape. We have been lifting together for 8 weeks. He does every thing I do, including strongman training, except for the olympic lifting. Today he squatted 2 times bodyweight for 4 reps. He only weighs 100lbs and squatted 210 for 4. I was so proud. He can also strict OH press his bodyweight for reps. I just wanted to pass that along to you guys. He wants to do strongman when he is a little older and can put on some weight. Right now we are working on getting him into the 112 class.

Having him flip the tire until he passes out?

I remember at a gym I was at the owner was training some MMA guys (Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez), he would say if they could flip our lighter tire 100 times without stopping, then their conditioning was getting to where it needed to be. Must have worked because they are both top 10 in the world in their weight classes.

Anyway, good luck. I'm sure he's in great hands.

when i wrestled i did high rep type of stuff along with heavier lifts

225 x50-60reps on the dead, or high rep squating accompanied by a heavy deadlift day etc...

Kurt Angles Book, "its true its true" had some of the things he did while training for the olympics

He needs to concentrate on more conditioning than lifting. I think the strongman training is great for wrestling. I wish I would known about when I wrestled. But wrestling is more conditioning, then strength. Obviously being stronger than your opposition is great but if you can't go the distance somethings wrong. Good job on your part for helping him.

I know all about the conditioning aspect, I wrestled for almost 10 years before I joined the AF. Kids his age only take 5-6 weeks to really get in shape so that is why we are working on his strength mostly. At the end of every workout though we run stairs or push a car and on strongman days he goes for distance instead of max weight like me. When we get closer to the actual season we will lean more towards high rep stuff and conditioning. We won't be running though. I still don't know why wrestlers are running. You don't ever run in a match and if you are you're getting your butt kicked.

Thanks for the input guys.

Definately be working on strength. You are doing the right stuff. I also agree with the 5-6 weeks of conditioning. I personally love running in wrestling. Sprints. It opens up the lungs and can give you that second wind you need late in a match. Of course, I don't like to do distance, but I do like sprints. But, you are doing great stuff and this kid sounds like a machine!

We sprint all the time. We just won't be doing distance. Thanks man!

Javorek Complex 1 4x6

Get him to 40% of body weight. Once he gets that move on to more intense bar and db complexes. Repeat 300 yard shuttles are good. Basically lactate threshold training.
