Thought I'd give you guys a little brief update on things. As of right now I'm 10 weeks out from my first *cough* bodybuilding show *cough*...280lb. with 11.9%bodyfat. Leanest I have ever been with zero drop off in strength gains. A pleasant surprise because I was sure as POOPY that when I started to diet it would go in the tank but it hasn't. I've also been approached about getting into pro wrasslin' so we'll see if that pans out or not. And my agent still wants to find me a pro football team to play for. Apparently there's a new league called the All American Football League which pays pretty hansomly.

I've directed all my focus towards this show at the end of August (I have to otherwise I'll go in under prepared).

My diet is done by carb cycling. I've mentioned it on here before, but the upshot of it is you do a 3 day rotation. Day 1 is zero carbs; Day 2 is medium carbs; Day 3 is high carb day. Carb sources are waxy maize starch, white rice, and vegatables. Protein comes from ground turkey breast, whey protein isolate, and orange roughy fish (my nutritionist rommended it - I hate fish but this stuff is awesome!). Fat source is olive oil.

My training schedule is the good ole' - chest/shoulders/triceps/abs --- biceps/back/abs --- calves/hams/quads.....right now I'm training twice a day (once in the AM and once in the PM in place of an overload of cardio).

Thats great Matt! Keep us up to date with pics, more training video's if you can and kick BEHIND(oups)

As far as the league, UFL that plans on competing with the nfl, get all over it! Mark Cuban, self made multi-billionaire is behind it and is a genius! Check out his blog, not far down he talks about the UFL.

Best of luck to you, doesn't seem like you need it with your dedication.

Maybe he meant that matt should kick a mule? :T:

That's interesting matt, as many lame bodybuilders (most of the guys in commercial gyms and on message boards) out there as there are, the hardcore ones are really interesting to follow/read about. I really like Justin Harris' log over on EliteFTS. Keep us posted!!

Or men... Hey I'm just saying.

Anyway, it sounds like everything is going well for you. Good luck for the show, and be sure to put some photies up.

Good stuff man, sounds like you're getting all your ducks in a row.

Can't believe you're doing a bodybuilding show before a strongman one though. Sounds dangerously like a step over to the dark side...

Honestly the decision came down to a few things. #1 being I didn't want to be 300+ anymore. #2 my lower body joints were really starting to feel the effects of years and years of 500lb squats and 600lb deads on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. #3 as fun as it is to lift massive weights after about a decade of nothing but devotion towards strongman/powerlifting/football style training I think I needed a change of pace and reward myself with actually being able to see my muscles instead of taking a leap of faith that they really are under all that adipose tissue.

Yeah, I can certainly understand 1 and 2.

Number 3 I could understand if only I had any muscle underneath worth talking about...

You should get some pics up of the comp. or just before, be really interesting to see the transformation.

Is there any one reason for the roughy?
I'm a fan of all fish, just wonderign why the roughy in particular was recommended

Sounds like it's working great for you, I'm trying to do some carb cycling modeled after yours, but good ness, it's hard on the 0 carb days, because I can't snack...
Plus it means no fruit!
I guess I'll find out how it works for me!

Not sure why he chose orange roughy...I told him I hated fish with a passion and he promised I'd like this kind so I gave it a try and he was right. As far as the carb cycling. Its hard on zero carb days for sure. I trained legs today on zero carbs and it was an absolute bear to get through.

How about Salmon? It definitely has it's own flavor, and it contains some awesome fats.

In crunch time right now. I'm 7.5 weeks out from my show. Cardio has been bumped up to twice a day everyday - even on leg day. AM and post workout on Upperbody days and Am and PM on leg days.

I've dropped lifting twice a day, but am lifting 7 days a week currently. Hit 335 x 3 x 10 on incline bench today. The day before I did 365lb x 3 x 10 on squats...as you can see I'm keeping this in a maintance stage at the time being. More concerned with diet and cardio than moving crazy poundages.

Next week I'll be doing a dry run. Dropping sodium, artificial sweetners, and taking a natural diuretic with a very very low carb diet Monday - Thursday --- carbing up Friday as if my show would be on a Saturday. Just to get a sense of how my body will feel the week before.

Although I'm 7.5 weeks out I do have a plan B incase I'm not ready. There is a show a month later that is my back up plan.

lolol that was hilarious.

I agree with what Cronin said about hardcore bodybuilders. Good luck at your first show and with possible comebacks to football.

I still have no idea how your video didn't work...

Get settled into my ridiculous new pad the next 6 weeks...then competing the following 2 - 6 weeks...so perhaps a visit around xmas/new years -- that would be awesome!!

But thanks Mac. Honestly I wasn't sure if I had it in me, but after all the hard work in everything else I've done I figured why not try my hand in this too!? What I've realized (and I knew this already) is that bodybuilding is indeed a 24 hour gig. My attention to detail in diet and cardio is like nothing I've experienced before. With football, powerlifting, and strongman training that I've done in the past if I wanted to have a pizza with the boys on a Friday night it was fair game, but now I get upset with myself if I have some strawberries at 10pm haha.

But yeah, a visit to LV this late fall/early winter when it's bulk back up time should be fun!

Funny, Im going in the opposite direction, from Bbuilding to the Strength Comps...

I got sick of the dieting, mood swings, low bodyfat and injuries, etc, etc....BUT, it has been an awesome experience to date, prepped me for where I am, and to be in great shape, and look decent, ya know??

So if you need some help dialing in, just let me know, I have the dieting down to a science...Im sure your body is different, but overall, the dieting is similar. Will u be using diuretics, and are you using any fatburners to help you right now?? I have a few tricks up my sleeve for last minute prior to show, wine, glycerol, potassium, etc...let me know:)

Congrats and good luck with your prep!!!

Any updates Matt? You're what-3 weeks out now?

Matt Meinrod

Being that it's my first show I decided to do one 5 weeks later. I'm 55 days out right now. Things are going great. Diet is spot on. I'm only doing about an hour of cardio a day and need to step it up to 2 hours a day very very soon. I'm actually still weighing 278 to 280lb. I've managed to pack on some serious mass to my legs while contest prep dieting. Never saw it coming, but I've found myself pushing extra hard in the gym for a fear of looking disproportionate on stage. I think I've brought up a lot of weak areas.

Matt, how do you think this leaning out has effected your speed. You ran a pretty good 40 before. Now it must be damn good.

Thanks Callie and everyone else for the support!!! I've decided to do a bigger contest than previously planned. I'm doing a level 5 show November 3rd in St. Augustine Florida - National Qaulifier. Good news is I have more time to shred up but the bad news it runs into football season tailgating haha, I love discipline and sacraficing!

Not that I care about my speed, but I actually ran sprints about a month ago and felt very quick on my feet. Hell I ran a 5.0 at 315lb so at 278 to 280lb I can only imagine what I'd clock in at.

Now that I have nearly 3 more months of prepartion I've dropped cardio a bit and an now back to lifting twice a day. Once in the AM and once in the late PM. Sessions are short about 45 minutes long.
