Chris Lee got 1st in Teen and Sarge got 2nd in Master. I do not know the placings in events for Chris but John "Sarge" Allen got 2nd in Log Clean and Press, 2nd in Yoke/Farmers, 1st place in Drag and Power Stairs, 2nd in deadlift and 1st in Stones. Three 2nd place finishes and two 1st place finishes equaled out to a 2nd overall by one point.
Congrats Sarge and Chris. Represented the Sequim Team in a fine fashion on the National Level. :YR:

thanks everyone, it was a great show, willy and dione ran it really well. it was very fast paced, and went extremely smooth. my event placings were tie for 1st in the log press, 1st in the yoke/farmers medley, 1st in the sled drag/power stairs medley, 2nd in the deadlift medley, and 1st in the stones.
Patrick, the rules to qualify for teen nationals are the same as for any other division. it's really not hard to qualify for teens around here, because there aren't really any shows with an actual teen division, so at any given show, you probably won't have more than 3 teens in any particular division. in fact, i bet you qualified at the washington's strongest man, were there any other heavyweight teens besides you and kevin?

nope!, i was figuring i had to go out and hunt down a teen contest in somewhere like alabama or something... hmmmm that means i have qualified twice this year, anyways what were the weights for the events??(curious)

Sounds good guys, what were the weights in the deadlift medley for the light weight teens ?
Chris Lee
08-01-2005, 02:03 PM
the weights were really light, a 160 lbs log, 500 yoke, 200 farmers handles, 500 sled, 350 power stair, deadlift medley was ridiculously light 245 to 405 with 4 weights, stones were supposed to be 140-235, but they gave us the heavyweight teen stones which were 160-260 with 5 stones. so it was a pretty light competition.

wow i would have even had an easy time(of course i am slow so i wouldent have won ) , do you know the weights on the dl for heavies and the log????if they are close the only thing i have to worry about is getting my speed up and working on the stones :)
Chris Lee

kevin, that wouldve been sweet if you couldve competed, i would have loved to meet you, you're a huge inspiration to me. yeah, no nat's at all for you this year huh? can't compete in teens or open, and the pro nat's got cancelled, that sucks.
pat, the heavyweight teens had a 200 lbs log, which was a pretty big jump from our (lightweights) little 160 lbs log. and the heavyweight deadlift was only 20 lbs heavier than ours, so the final weight was only 425, still a ridiculously light weight. not sure on the rest of the events.

It was great to meet Chris and Sarge. Thanks for all the help guys. I was glad to pull out a respectable performance against such a big, strong, group of heavyweight teens. :)

4th place, one point out of third. No point beating myself up about the mistake I made that cost me a trophy, anymore. It was awesome, and I guess I'll just have to come down to WA as a lightweight for next year to meet you, Pat. :)
Patrick McGuffin

That would be awesome, i think i am going to try to get to 225 as a permanent weight, at least until wa. next year, what are the weight catagories for teen? or are they the same as open? i'd like to see and meet more teen competitors, maybee even get more from here(that is one of my goals), so how did you do in the log(that is what i am aiming to improve the most, followed by stones /tire)and what did the winner do?
Ps. it would be cool to hang out at a contest :)

yeah, jamie had a great showing, too. pat, the lightweight cutoff for teens is 185. i'm gonna move up to heavies for next year. hopefully i can finally break the 200 barrier before next season. i would love to get to like 210 if i could, but with my metabolism i think 200-205 is more realistic, we'll see what happens. hopefully the freshman 15 will hit me quickly my first year in college.

also, pat, what are you having trouble with on your overhead? without knowing what your main problems are, i can suggest working on your power jerk and upping your front squat as much as possible. hit tricep work hard to help with the lockout, you'll need it when going for max reps and fatigue takes out your leg drive. also shoulder work will help you out, i think in particular bringing up your middle and rear delts to be proportionate with your front delts (a lot of people, myself included, have overdeveloped front delts from excessive benching)
Jamie McEwan

I only got three reps on the 200 log, Pat. Very weak, indeed. I'll be a lightweight adult next year, and hopefully have a better press.
Patrick McGuffin
08-08-2005, 05:24 PM
my overhead in general stinks, poor leg drive, lack of power in the triceps ect. i usually stop when the momentum from the leg drive stops, i was going to start focusing on my oh on wed's from now on and add lock outs and more front squats in, i doo do middle and rear delt work also, but i doo need to work on triceps(most likely cg presses), well with 185 as the cut off i dont even need to think about it, i am a heavy :D
Jamie, three reps is still a lot better than i would have done, i doubt i would have gotten even 1 rep, so its not that bad :)
Jamie McEwan

You're still young enough to be a competitive presser in the heavies at 18 or 19, Pat. That was my worst event, but I redeemed myself in the others. ;)
Just for your interest the winner of the log press was a 17 year old football player who did 12 reps!
Patrick McGuffin
08-08-2005, 06:27 PM
12 huh, i gues that i have to get, 15 reps by next year:D damn, that is alot for someone so young, i will really have to hit the pressing hard, i should be ordering a log on the 16th or 17th of this month so it is all good.

Don't get stressed if your log isn't up there with that by next year. If I was to look back and change anything about my training leading up to it, it wouldn't involve my log, but rather my speed with the yoke, sled, and stones. I think speed and stamina are truly what make a well-developed teen strongman, rather than power. At least that's the way I've seen the teen Nats. being set up in the past.
Patrick McGuffin

dont worry most of my overhead work will be on weds. and more speed events will be worked on during my event training, and i plan on working on my speed and stamina more this winter so i should be doing better in events like that next year.
