</TD></TR><TR><TD class=bodytext>We are fortunate to have just received a report on Day 1 (just completed) at Canada’s Strongest Man from Samuel Dube, Ph.D. and Hugo Girard is leading, with Jessen Paulin in second place.

Here is Sam’s report:

”The first event of the day was the Arm-Over-Arm Hoist, using the now legendary apparatus straight from the Dolbeau-Mistassani World Muscle Power Championships. The weight was 1,340 lbs. with a 6:1 gear ratio. Hugo won the event handily. It started to rain heavily midway during Dominic`s effort; indeed, intermittent rain punctuated the show, necessitating frequent pauses during certain events. Unfortunately, Grant Connors suffered a moderate tear of his right biceps in this event, but attempted to participate in the other three anyway.

Dominic dominated Fingal`s Fingers, with Hugo coming in a close second and newcomer Danny Frame finishing all fives pillars as well for third place.

The third event, the squat, saw many fall by the wayside. The 700 lb. load was set up so that no bounces could be used. Hugo won the event with 7 reps while both Dominic and Louis-Phillippe fought out 6 reps each.

In the last event of the day, the Atlas Stones, only the current Canadian Champion, Jessen Paulin managed to do all five stones. Surprisingly, Hugo`s considerable lead was diminished when he was unable to place the third stone.

We predict a fierce battle tomorrow between Hugo, Paulin, Filiou, and Jean to determine the 2007 Canada`s Strongest Man!”

Here are the places and points after the first day:

1. Hugo Girard 40
2. Jessen Paulin 37
3. Dominic Filiou 36.5
4. Louis-Phillippe Jean 35.5
5. Christian Savoie 31
6. Daniel Frame 26.5
7. Chris Colonval 25.5
8. Scott Cummine 22.5
9. Matt Parkes 20.5
10. Joe Montgomery 18.5
11. Grant Connor 9.5
12. John Dungey 5 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Correct me if im wrong but isnt Jessen Paulin the same guy in Hugo's movie ? Anyone know what ever happened to Travis Lyndon?

Grant Buhr
08-19-2007, 06:09 AM
Yes, Jessen was in Hugo's movie.

Travis had a biceps injury en route to winning the 2006 Ontario's Strongest Man. That, on top of a knee injury the year before, prompted his retirement from the sport in July 2006 to focus on career and family. He is still very much involved in the sport -- but as a referee and advisor now.

In particular, I'm very happy to hear that Hugo won the squat event with 7 reps of 700.

This suggests his legs and core strength are where they need to be.

Dominic, Jessen and Louis-Phillipe are kickin a$$ too (Dominic just won Quebec's strongest man, didn't he?) ... hope there's room for more than 1 Canadian at WSM.

</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="bodytext">“'The Boss,' as they call Hugo Girard, did what he had said: put the stakes high and fight it out,” reports Paul Ohl from the Canada’s Strongest Man contest.

”Up to this day, the Canadian phenom had never lost a contest on home grounds and it appears that he will do what it takes to keep the record untouched.

After the first day and four events, Hugo Girard won the Seated vertical pull, won the squat ( 7 reps w/720 pounds), took second place at the Fingal Fingers and had a let down at the Atlas stones. Enough to clutch first place with 40 points out of a max of 48.

Jessen Paulin, the current Canadian champion is right there for the fight, finishing at 37 points. He completed the day putting up all five stones. As it is many call him ‘Lord of the Stones.’

Dominic Filiou, at 36.5 points is very much in the battle with Louis-Philippe Jean, the upcoming star, one point behind at 35.5 points.

Christian Savoie, another surprising Quebecer, is in fifth place with 31 points.

Sunday will gather thousands . With a sunny forcast and cool weather, the contestants will be facing the grueling trucks's pull, the four logs, the lumberjack 825 pounds's walk and the crushing medley: 1000 pounds tire flips (4), 800 pounds yoke and the 525 pounds power stairs.

If Hugo Girard keeps up the pace, he should reach top three in all four events and win the title. He had great fears before the squat given the injured knee that kept him away for two years. He won the event. Now he is four events away from his initial goal: getting the title back. As for Jessen Paulin he is one proud defending champion. A great gentleman, he supported Hugo Girard all the way during rehab. Both men deserve to be recognized as champions.”

Stay tuned today!

Sounds awsome. Wish I could go.

Dominic Filiou is the new 2007 CSM.

Filiou Wins in Canada! by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2007 IronMind

It came down to the final event - the power stairs - and it matched up Hugo Girard and Dominic Filiou.

At this point, Girard lead Filiou by one-half point, so this was it . . . Girard reportedly gave it everything he had in the last two events, but he could not complete the power stairs . . . Filiou did, and that gave him the title and the World’s Strongest Man invitation.

Here are the final places and points for the top four:

1. Dominic Filiou 78-1/2 points
2. Jessen Paulin 78
3. Hugo Girard 77
4. Louis-Philippe Jean 71.5

Wow. I'm really shocked by this. I hope Hugo can put it all together next year if he even chooses to.

I'm surprised that Hugo lost. I was rooting for him. I just got his DVD in the mail yesterday, and that made me like him more. Atleast he can always try for next year.

Well done big Dom!

I'm sure Hugo will be back bigger and better. He's had an amazing season considering the injuries he is coming back from just now.

More to the point, I'd be quite surprised if he wasn't invited to WSM anyway...

Tony Christopher

I'm actually very happy for big Dom. I hope this means he's finally putting it all together.

It would suck if 10 years from now people said:

"Hey, remember that huge Canadian guy ... had tons of potential but never put it together. What ever happened to him?"

Hugo ... what can I say, disappointed for him, but I hope he gets an invite to WSM anyway. I think he deserves it. It doesn't seem fair that only 1 Canadian would get the call. I'm not surprised that Hugo struggled with power stairs (an endurance event that puts a lot of stress on one's knees) but am surprised that he couldn't get all the logs on the log medley and that he wasn't able to load all the stones.

And very impressive performance by Jessen, he had some disappointing performances this year but looks like he's back on form.

Guys, I understand the disapointment that many have, seeing Hugo lose his first comp on home soil, BUT, the results ended this way because of hi knee. He's promised everybody, that he will come in better shape next year (wink-wink: knee condition).

This being said, congrats to Dominic - great victory. Here are a few pictures from this afternoon:

Hopefully Hugo can hit it better next year. Seems weird to me that he is said to have knee problems but won the squat event. In any case, looks like a great competition, and congrats to Dom... hopefully a 2nd invite goes to Canada and Jessen will be able to go as well. :)

How you squat affects whether or not your knee's are affected. Hugo squats with a powerlifting style by sitting back.

Congratulations to Dominic, that was tight.

I love how the cameraman has to step and lean back to get a shot of Dom. Even with that angle, he was probably still only able to focus on his chin and neck.

He's actually looking a bit leaner than he was at WSM 06.

Hugo is looking great... I can't wait to see what he can do once the knee is all better.

Anyhow this is what I had said about Jessen, he peaks late in the year. Always has. I hope Dominic and Jessen (if Jessen get's an invite to WSM) both make the finals. It all depends on events and hopefully they won't have rediculous ones like runnning in water with barrels.

Good point Jesse - I have the same problem since tearing my quad - Im back squating(no where near my best yet) without to many problems but If I do a coupl eof farmers walk with only 60kg in each hand then my knee balloons up and gives me probelms for a couple of days!

Since I'm a geek and I like to dissect things (guess that's what made me become a doctor) I'll comment on some key results:

Arm over Arm vertical lift

1. Hugo Girard...........36.59s
2. Jessen Paulin.........37.36s
3. Christian Savoie......37.48s
4. Chris Colonval........50.39s
5. Joe Montgomery.......123"
6. LP Jean..............121"
7. Scott Cummine........118"
8. Matt Parkes..........100.25"
9. Dominic Filiou........99"
10. John Dungey..........72.5"
11. Daniel Frame.........39"
12. Grant Conners........38.5"

A little surprising that Dominic is so low in the order here ... his arms look like they're capable of uprooting large oak trees, yet he struggles on arm strength events. Maybe it's still a grip issue. Otherwise, no real surprises.

Fingal Fingers

1. Dominic Filiou........5/40.96
2. Hugo Girard...........5/47.29
3. Daniel Frame..........5/56.62
4. Scott Cummine.........4/34.55
5. Jessen Paulin.........4/35.23
6. LP Jean...............4/35.44
7. Matt Parkes...........4/37.39
8. Chris Colonval........3/20.95
9. Joe Montgomery........3/22.12
10. Christian Savoie.....3/22.59
11. John Dungey..........3/23.83
12. Grant Conners........3/30.93

No real surprises here, awesome leverage for Dominic seals the deal.

720lbs Squat for reps

1. Hugo Girard...........7 reps
2. Dominic Filiou........6 reps
2. LP Jean...............6 reps
4. Christian Savoie......5 reps
5. Daniel Frame..........4 reps
6. Grant Conners.........????? Can't make it out (fax is sketchy)
7. Jessen Paulin.........2 reps
8. Scott Cummine.........1 rep
8. Matt Parkes...........1 rep
8. Chris Colonval........1 rep
8. Joe Montgomery........1 rep
12.John Dungey...........0 reps

Very encouraging contest for Hugo so far ... you'd think he'd struggle with a squat event. At this point I would have expected him to cruise to the title.

Atlas Stones (platforms from 72" to 54" stones from 245-385")

1. Jessen Paulin.........5/73.43
2. LP Jean...............4/21.89 (WOW, that's fast)
3. Dominic Filiou........4/32.03
4. Christian Savoie......4/36.75
5. Chris Colonval........4/57.43
6. Daniel Frame..........4/59.72
7. Matt Parkes...........3/37.58
8. Hugo Girard...........2/15.03
9. Scott Cummine.........2/15.33
10. Joe Montgomery.......2/38.34
11. Grant Conners........0
12. John Dungey..........0

Two stones for Hugo? WTF? Did he reinjure himself here and just didn't tell anyone? JP Jean is on the verge of greatness. If you improves just 10-20% at each event he'll be a threat at Worlds.

Day 2

Harness and rope truck pull

1. Dominic Filiou.......33.18s
2. Jessen Paulin........42.22s
3. Matt Parkes..........45.74s
4. Christian Savoie.....48.85s
5. Hugo Girard..........49.72s
6. LP Jean..............53.12s
7. Scott Cummine........53.14s
8. Chris Colonval.......57.14s
9. Daniel Frame.........69ft
10. Grant Conners.......63.2ft
11. Joe Montgomery......58ft
12. John Dungey.........45.2ft

Again makes me think Hugo may have suffered an injury, he usually rocks at Truck Pulls.

Log Medley (four 12" logs, 280, 300, 320, 340)

1. LP Jean..............4/36.40s
2. Dominic Filiou.......4/46.29s
3. Hugo Girard..........3/22.70s
4. Daniel Frame.........2/18.92s
5. Matt Parkes..........2/22.29s
6. Jessen Paulin........2/23.93s
7. Grant Conners........2/50.49s
8. Christian Savoie.....1/7.98s
9. Scott Cummine........1.9.39s
10. Chris Colonval......1/24.55s
11. Joe Montgomery......0
12. John Dungey.........0

Hugo getting beat on Logs? An upper body pressing event? Really makes me think there's something wrong.

Timber Carry 800+ lbs

1. Christian Savoie.....20.76s
2. Jessen Paulin........33.20s
3. Hugo Girard..........48.10s
4. LP Jean..............59.76s
5. Dominic Filiou.......54.06ft
6. Joe Montgomery.......40.1ft
7. John Dungey..........30.5ft
8. Chris Colonval.......14.5ft
9. Matt Parkes...........2.5ft
10. Daniel Frame.........0.01ft
11. Grant Conners..........0
12. Scott Cummine..........0

Hugo smoked Mariusz on this type of event last year at the Mohegan Sun ... while his performance here isn't bad, it isn't great either.

Super Medley (750lbs Super Yoke, 1000lbs Tire Flip, Power stairs for five 17" stairs with

525lbs)

1. Jessen Paulin........5 stairs/52.51s (WOW!!!)
2. Dominic Filiou.......5 stairs/74.91s
3. Christian Savoie.....4 stairs/79.38s
4. Hugo Girard..........3 stairs/ 78.25s
5. LP Jean..............1 stair/ 54s
6. Matt Parkes............2/35.78s
7. Daniel Frame...........2/41.06s
8. Scott Cummine..........2/41.11s
9. Chris Colonval.........2/44.50s
10. John Dungey...........2/49.79s
11. Joe Montgomery........2/11.01ft
12. Grant Conners.........1/62.67s

Jessen and Dominic obviously deserved to finish 1, 2 ... Jessen just flew. And Dominic's performance suggests a substantial improvement in his fitness level. Good sign for Worlds.

The first stone platform. For reference, John Dungey, pictured, is over 6'1" tall. Due to the platform design, stones cannot be braced against the platform, but must be hefted directly into place on the rings. This may explain some of the surprisingly poor results, as a lot of energy would have been expended to load the first two stones.
