In the last thread I made, I mentioned that last month I saw a rock-paper -scissors tournament on ESPN2. Well as odd as that was, I think I saw something on the TV guide that shocked me even more. I just saw that ESPN2 has a scrabble tournament on TV. SCRABBLE!!!! After this they might as well put on the last 10 years of the national spelling bee in a marathon.

Don't get me wrong, I love challenging my brain and learning more/getting smarter, but come on its ESPN.

This just leaves me to wonder if they're going to have some announcers that were "professional" scrabble players and now carry nicknames like that Ro-Sham-Boa guy.

Dude, don't knock Scrabble!

When you're playing your grandmother and she uses 'Penis' and 'Intercourse' in the same game, it's really hard not to throw up/wince. Great core workout.

Cruciverbalist - A compiler or solver of crossword puzzles

Josser - One not born to circus life

Rhinotillexomania - Habitual or obsessive nose-picking

Xenoglossy - The ability to speak a language without having learned it

I'm joking about Scrabble being a true sport, but not joking that my gran used those words in a game when I was about 12! Scarred for life.

Callipygian- haha brilliant.

Most of these ones you guys are listing are far too long for Scrabble.

There are so many other sports that they could be showing...
When I was in Ukraine a couple weeks ago they had all sorts of different sports on all the time. Luge, cycling (whatever...), gymnastics, O lifting, hell they even had synchronized swimming. Why are the American sports channels so limited? I do love football and some of the other popular sports but I for one am sick of ALWAYS having to watch them or watch shows talking about them. Give me a break! Why can't they show fencing, or wrestling, or weight lifting more? Honestly, how much can you talk about Barry Bonds hitting a ball? Somebody needs to tie up and threaten (yeah, fight club style) the executives who make up these program schedules.

I agree, it's ridiculous. As someone else posted earlier, I actually caught a few seconds of that plastic cup stacking championships yesterday. What the heck is THAT about???

I also get sick of watching Barry Bonds hit that record homer for the 1000th time, and Micheal Vick walking into the courthouse surrounded by cops in that same old tired piece of footage. ENOUGH ALREADY! I too like mainstream sports, but I feel that they are shoved down our throats by the mainstream media to the point of overkill.

One channel I like is the college sports channel. (CSTV, channel 610 on Direct TV) I used to wrestle in high school and they do show a lot of college wrestling tournaments and beach volleyball (which I also like and have played) as well as other sports. Sometimes they show competitive whitewater kayaking also. That's pretty cool to watch.

My biggest beef with Versus Network is that they never show what the DirectTV listing says. Only about half the time my TV says IFSA strongman is coming on does it actually come on. Then it does come on when it isn't listed. Versus also needs to get its act together concering its listings.

I think that ESPN probably thinks that only the "big 3" sports - baseball, basketball, and football get them good ratings. A smaller company would likely listen to its viewers but ESPN is so big I doubt if they do. We could possibly try logging on to their website and telling them what we would like to see more (and less) of.

I personally would like to see that Canadian Strongman Championships that just took place, but I doubt we will be able to see it here in the states. (Is there a TV station on Direct TV that shows Canadian sports?) Or that IFSA sponsored Gododdin Games they had in Scotland recently. That sounds like it would be cool to watch. It aired in the UK, but not here. Olympic lifting would be cool on TV as well, as would powerlifting.

I guess we strongmen are also much different than the average viewers. My wife (a "big 3" sports fan) can watch ESPN or NFL network for long periods of time if they are talking the "big 3" sports, but she will get bored quickly watching powerlifting, college wrestling, or olympic lifting. She did really enjoy the strongman contest I took her to, however, and she looks forward to going to another one. There are probably many more people like her (big 3 sports fans) out there in the USA than like us, but still, I agree we need some variety.
