View Full Version : The Long Journey to 240 lbs

Hello everyone I am starting a weight loss journey tomorrow to try and lose 140 lbs. I was at 380 lbs two years ago and started doing gym work and lost 85 lbs. I then got injured and was laid up for a long time. In that process I have gained all my weight back and I have become depressed about. I have been saying for the last two months that I was going to get back on track but I could not stick with it. Well today I had to climb four flights of stairs up and back and I was short of breathe afterwords and that was the final straw. I run a message board about grip strength but I want to post my journal where most of the members don't know me from my site.

I hope once I get down to 300 I can start training with the weights and some strongman toys but for now its all about eating clean, and cardio.

Congrats on deciding to become healthier. I'm concerned about your cardio only statement though. I know you've probably heard this a million times and just want to do cardio and diet and no weights or strongman so you'll stay focused on losing weight and not get off track and start focusing on lifting heavy but you will lose the fat much faster if you keep lifting and train a little light strongman. Trust me. I train people for a living and I deal mostly with overweight people. I have a lot of athletes as well but at least 70% of my clients number one goal is to lose weight/get leaner. I've learned a few diet tricks and fun 'lifting for your cardio' workouts along the way as well. If you want any advice I would be happy to help you in any way I can. Either way I would like to give you the speech I give every one that I have ever helped out. It goes something like this "Everyone wants to lose weight casually and not get too obsessed with the scale and losing so much weight every week. Forget it. There is no such thing. To make changes to your body you must become OBSESSED with it. Weigh yourself as much as you like. It will keep you honest. Sure there can be a bit of daily fluctuation but if you are keeping everything tight you will not fluctuate that much. When doing cardio have goals and be OBSESSED about meeting them. Always strive to go a bit faster or a bit farther just like you would in lifting/stronman. Losing weight is simple math. If you are burning more than you are taking in you will lose weight. Period. Accept nothing less than 2 pounds a week. If you didn't lose that much figure out why and fix it for next week." Sorry if you didn't want the speech or it's something you already know. I am assuming you are posting here for moral support so I intend to give it to you.
Good Luck!

P.S. Weigh yourself first thing in the am after you pee and before you eat and post it here so we can hold you accountable.

I will and I know from losing the 80 lbs plus that muscle burns more calories than fat. I also had a personal trainer who had me eating 6x a day. She was really good a ex female BB.

George, when I had my most weight loss success I was just focusing on one meal at a time. Making the right choices every time you're hungry is the way to change your lifestyle and become healthier. It's so easy to slip that you have to remain militant about your lifestyle.

So just eat clean when I am hungry?

Let's hear it. Inquiring minds want to know.

May I make a couple of suggestions?

1. I'd like to see you have some protein and healthy fat added to your breakfast. (See below)

2. I'd like to see some fruit added to meal #2 to keep your insulin level.

3. Put the brown rice from dinner with lunch in place of the apple and put a tbsp of olive oil on your mixed greens. You should be ready for some more slow burning carbs by now and the olive oil will provide some healthy fat.

4. Put the apple with the carb advantage bar. Again to keep your insulin level so your energy levels stay up.

5. No carbs with dinner. You are going to bed soon so if your insulin levels drop a bit and you feel sluggish that's okay you'll sleep better.

6. Have a 30-50g whey protein shake mixed with water and a 1/4 cup of cashews, walnuts or almonds about an hour before bed. This will keep your metabolism stoked while you sleep and help fight off the hunger pangs expeienced when on a diet for a while.

My favorite diet breakfast:

3/4 cup oatmeal (quaker 1 minute oats-DO NOT COOK)
3/4 cup skim milk
1/4 cup sliced almonds
2 pineapple rings (Fresh is best but in the can in it's own juice is fine)

Put the above in a bowl and chop up the pineapple rings into smaller peices and pour milk over. Eat like cold cereal. No sweetners needed.

For Protein have a 30-50g whey protein shake mixed with water on the side.

Tip: If using canned pineapple keep the slices in a tupperwear bowl in the fridge so they are chilled.

Just some food for thought!
-Mike
P.S. Bodyweight box squats with your hands clasped behind your head for 3 or 4 sets of 25 pausing each rep on the box is a good start for leg training without a gym. Superset those with pushups and you've got a great conditioning workout. When I was in MMA we used to do tons of bodyweight squats supersetted with pushups for conditioning before a fight. A lot of times my weight training would fall by the wayside to keep from evertraining and when I came back I found that the bodyweight exercises kept my strength up pretty good.

If I'm off base making these suggestions I sincerely apologize. It's just that I've seen far too many people start off a diet on way too little food. Sure you lose weight a bit faster in the beginiing but once your metabolism slows down the weight stops coming off and the only way to continue is to drop more food. If you start off eating too little you'll either end up living on a 1 cracker a day diet or you'll become frustrated and give up. If you make the changes I suggested I promise you'll still lose weight and you'll feel awesome doing it. When you plateau you can always cut your portions by a bit. I attached a couple of pics from my last diet results. I followed a diet almost exactly the same as what I recommended to you. I took no fat buners or supplements of any kind other than Animal pak multi-vitamins and whey protein shakes.

Bad day 2

I woke up sick this morning and i felt it coming on for a few days but I thought I had it kicked with the Vitamin C but guess not.

Food intake today was nothing more than Bullion Cubes, Saltines, and Gatorade

Exercises: surfing the Internet wrapped up in a blanket, running to the toilet, and watching Japanese Hardcore Wrestling 8 on my TIVO

Thank You and Yes that is my 11 year old daughter who I wish to see go to college and get married so I need to take control now. If I cant do it this time then I am getting the Gastric Bypass.

...and you will. A gastric bypass is just someone else taking control over your will (the Dr making it so you'll get sick if you eat too much). Don't give someone else control over your life. People with gastric bypasses have all kinds of nutrient absorbtion problems. I assume you are an athlete and you want to be able to perform at your best one day. How can you if you can't even get all your nutrients absorbed. Also, if you eat more than you are supposed to your gut will eventually stretch out and allow you to get fat again. I train 2 people who have had them and they both are mad that they didn't do it without the surgery. Once they saw that they still had to make all the right choices they realized if they could do it now they could've done it then too. They both have tons of trouble getting in enough nutrients on a daily basis and have both gotten violently sick from even drinking too much water at once. In order to live healthy after the surgery you have to make every meal count. Every morsel of your food must be small but nutrient dense. You also have to eat small meals throuout the day to make sure you get in enough nutrients or your hair will fall out, skin gets dry and hangy and you feel like shit! Nothing becomes easy it's the exact same regimen you should be on now. The difference is the threat of getting sick if you mess up hangs over your head constantly. Use what ever motivates you (your daughter) to keep you on the straight and narrow. Don't even think for a second you can't do it. Never say the words "if I can't".
YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!! and YOU WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The left hand needs more work! was upset that I have only got a gallon of water in today but sometimes that happens. Food intake good but next week I need to hit the cardio hard and long.

Looks like you've been keeping your food in check. Good job bro! I hope your foot heals so you can get back to cardio soon.

PS Did I really see the words "French Fries" in a diet journal?-lol.

Not a real good day for me. My foot is getting better but the place where the original injury happened is now Turing into a hard and painful lump. Plus my Doctor has me lying around all day with my foot up and I cant work out and I am getting cabin fever. My diet was off as well today. I might hit the grippers tonight to keep on track on something.

Sorry for not updating or reviewing everyone else's journals. I got caught up with some family issues but I did maintain my diet and my workouts have been great. The Heavy Handles are one of the best tools that I have got in a long time. The doctor cleared me to go back to the gym next Monday so I will finally get to see what I can pull on the vBar and RT

Hit the Grippers really hard and some Heavy Handle work today. Also chalked up with the chalk I ordered on the recommendation of Chris and cleaned that 35lb blob with ease!

Today I cut wire for about 30 minutes and then I did 15 lbs on the IM Pinch Block. 5 sets of 10. I then did some Heavy Handle curls. I return to the gym Monday so I will get my cardio back and get some vBar and RT numbers for you all. My caloric intake was a little high today.

Family day so no training and for the love of God dont look at my diet journal. I broke 2000 calories and I am ashamed.
