I'm currently 9 days away from competing in 105kg Englands strongest man.The top 6 will qualifiy for Britains strongest man.
Feeling a bit sluggish these past few days.Training 5 days a week starting to hit me a bit now,not used to that extra day.But i need to keep up theses cardio sessions.
This was last nights session.
Log
50kg 5 presses
70kg 3 presses
90kg 1 rep
100kg 1 rep
105kg 3 cleans and presses in 75 second time limit, P.B at this weight.Nearly got 4 but missed lock out.
The log's not been going to well since i lost a bit too much weight earlier in the year ,but now my weight is back up to just under 105kg ,its beginning to get a bit better.
Squat
60kg 10 reps
100kg 3 reps
140kg 1 rep
Was supposed to do 180kg for my all out set but realised after that i'd put an extra 5kg on
185kg 10 reps P.B. Was hoping to do 11 reps tonight so i was a bit pissed until i realised about the extra 5 kg ,was then happy as i'm sure this would equate to 11 reps at 180kg.
One more squat session to go.

Thought i'd post my eating habits leading up to this comp which is pretty much the same as all year round exept in the off season so to speak i eat a bit more and more crap aswell.
Mon-Fri
8.00am
1 bowl of Alpen followed by a Prolab Whey Protein shake.
11.00am
3 rounds of Wholemeal tuna and dressing sandwhiches and bag of Walkers Lites
1.30pm
Either a tin of Heinz Baked Beans & Sausages or Healthy living rice pudding 624g followed by a pro biotic yogurt
4.00pm
Prolab whey protein shake followed by a couple of bannana's
At 6.00 or 7.00pm (depending if i have trained) i have what ever my sweet heart has cooked me
8.30ish
Chicken breast with either rice or pasta(with some greated cheese)
Saturday & Sunday much the same although i may have something on a Saturday night like KFC mmmmmm.
I take a multivitamin called 'Foreval 24 vitamins and minerals in one capsule'.I actually got these on prescription originally, when i had Mumps. But you can buy them over the counter to.There quite high strength and are for adults or the elderly(no jokes) who are ill or on a poor diet.
I take at least 300mg vit C through out the day dissolve into water.
I drink atleast 3 litres of water during the day and probably another 2 in the evening.
If i get joint trouble i'll take Glucosamine by Health Perception for a couple of months.
This all is holding my weight around 104kg.
Cardio this afternoon on the crosstrainer.Big improvement.High intensity to medium.
Managed to stay on the top level 20 reistance for 5 minutes, Heart rate did not go above 170 bpm and could not go any quicker as legs were burning.Dropped it to 15 and kept heart rate at 160 bpm for 20minutes.

Big day tomorrow.Lots of pasta, chicken and rice tonight.Early night if my mind will allow it.Been with the family to Lego Land today which allowed me to chill out and not get all stressed up with my usual pre comp nerves.
Was chatting to a fellow athlete on the phone last night and we both were laughing how a couple of days before a comp we always think we've got a cold coming or an old injury flaring up.Usual tricks of the mind. :BB:

Under 105kg Englands strongest man.
Started the day out with usual nerves and some unfamiliar faces. Was expecting there to be 20-30 but 12 showed.
I'll start by saying Darren Sadler was awesome in every event as expected.
First event 105kg Log lift for reps.
It was a thicker log which i'd not done before and the time limit was only 60seconds.Olly Thompson was ref and was strict with the lockout as it was Englands.I managed 3 reps nearly got 4 but just as i locked it out i lost balance. As i'd never tried a thick log i was reasonably happy.3 reps placed me joint 5th.
Next event was 180kg squat for reps. After around 7 athletes had squated I was eyeing up the opposition to try and work out what i needed to do.Sadler i knew i could not beat and i was'nt sure about the powerlifter,so i thought the worst i'd get would be 3rd,so i squated 12 reps for the lead position and stopped even though i was good for 15.Sadler was last to go and did an easy 13 for the win.So with 12 reps i placed 2nd in the squat.
3rd event was giants fishing pole which i'd never done. You could tell the guy's who had trained at Physiques gym and practiced on it so i was pleased to place joint 3rd in this event which placed me 3rd overall.
4th event was Walk of pain which was carrying an old fashion milk churn by the handles for distance.Once picked up, you could not put it down. With my short legs i really struggled and distaster,i ended up in about 10th.I was so pissed off.Colin (Anderson) told me what i needed to do to qualifiy for Britains going into the last event.
5th event was deadlift hold using a Rover Metro. The handles were really thick and i could barely put my thumb over any of my fingers. With Colin shouting in my ear ,telling me i need this to qualify, i held on for 32 seconds i was in 1st place until Paul Wood and Darren Sadler's turn.Paul beat me by 1 second and Darren beat him so i placed 3rd in this event.
After what seemed like days with me worrying if i'd made the top 6,Colin came over smiling to tell me i came 4th overall qualified for Britains strongest man.
I was so pleased although one bad event cost me 3rd.
1st Darren Saddler
2nd Paul Wood
3rd Colin Lewis
4th Andy Lidbury
5th Scott Reid
6th John Fortey
----Above Qualify for British 105kg championship-----
7th Stuart Hayes
8th Wayne Bawcombe
9th Mike Betty
10th Mark Bagwell
11th Mark Smith
12th Mok

Back at training tonight(at last)MAN FLU nearly gone.
Knew i would not have a lot of energy and stamina tonight so i thought i'd go flat out for the first one.
Pallet drags
205kg 20 metres 30 seconds ,pleased to beat my training partner who's 15kg heavier than me,even if it was only by 1 second But boy was i bolloxed after.
245kg 10 metres
350kg tyre flips for technique
3 single flips
2 flips
2 single flips managed to do complete flips as in did not have to rest it on knee and re-grip.
High pulls with the tyre
1 set 3 reps
Finnished off with another 3 flips.
Mest about tonight, nothing to taxing on the lungs (except the drag).Hopefully by the end of next week i should be 100%.
Although i want to know whats happening with BSM it would be nice to have at least another 3 weeks to prepare.

Anyone who has seen a pic of my farmers walk (railway sleepers) knows how long they were. But i decided to shorten them today as it was just becoming impossible to turn with the with anything over 110kg.Took me over 2 and a half hours to cut them with a industrial size circular saw,and i was training in between.
SEMI -stiff leg deadlifts
75kg 5 rep
100kg 3 rep
130kg 3 rep
160kg 2 rep
200kg 1 rep
220kg 1 rep
225kg 1 rep
Stiff leg deads
200kg 3 reps
200kg 3 reps
Single arm hammer curls
21kg 5 reps x 3 sets
Had a quick go with un weighted farmers (64kg each, bare)
40m 1 turn
When i do farmers walk i'm quite stiff in the legs and tend to kind of flick them forward or i tend to waddle with the hips, this all makes me very slow with my short lgs.
Talking to Darren Sadler at England's,he said i need to try and lift the leg up and concentrate on moving the legs as if i were cycling. He said that training with Stumpy,Elwood and Dave Warner that they will use 105kg a side farmers for 80+metres.Then following week do really heavy farmers.
Thats what i need to do.
Patrick McGuffin
10-02-2005, 06:56 PM

Andy Lidbury

Yes as far as i know he's still competing.Big fan of Stumpy,as being a bit on the short side myself i no how hard it can be competing with the man mountains. :BB:

Went to Physiques gym in Bexhill south coast to meet up with the boys from there who then took me and my mate to the farm where they train and meet up with a few others.
Exellent training area ,i was well impressed (and jealous ).Really enjoyed it down there although i was'nt too happy with my performance in a couple of events.Had a real calorie issue yesterday due to training at a completely different time than normal and missed out on a lot of eating which left me with no energy.
Log
3 warm ups on a light log then moved on to a thicker log.
94kg 1 clean 3 presses
94kg 1 clean 2 presses
104kg 1 rep
114kg 1 clean 0 press
114kg 1 clean 0 press but closer

Stones
95kg-110kg-120kg,missed the 120kg due to height of platform, after a few tips from Colin tried again with 120kg on its own and got it up there.
95kg - 110kg -120kg- 130kg then tried the 170kg but could'nt even budge it
Tried to lift the 130kg on the higher platform,2 attempts but couldnot quite finnish it so moved it down to lower platform for 1 rep.
Crucifix

Had a couple of half hearted attempts with the 190kg
duck walk but did'nt have it in me.

Sussex showlifting comp.
Although it was great to meet up with everybody today i had a bad day competitive wise as i had to pull out ater the second event with an injury.
Came joint 3rd on 2 events but did not get a trophy/medal as it was decided on bodyweight.Only by .2 of a kilo on the log, gutted.
Cage deadlift pulled 280kg no problem but while trying for 300kg lost my form and fucked my back.Within 25 minutes i could barely touch my kneesand so had to pull out.
After 4 pain killers a couple of hours of trying to stretch and my dad rubbing my back and plenty of deep heat i gave the stones a try but after loading 90,100,110kg i could not get low enough to get a propper hold of the 120kg stone to get my hands underneath and just as i was about to load it onto the wall it slipped and i left it there.
To top it off i nearly had a head on,on the way home due to some tosser speeding up as i was overtaking him.
Other than that i did enjoy watching the comp.Impressive log lift and cage deadlifting from Big Dale Norris.

Was really hoping for 110 - 120m tonight but after those front squats i had no speed in my legs.Worked hard though going as quick as i could so i should benifit from it.Still keeping them light, working on speed, sort of starting from scratch.

Cardio
Crosstrainer 25 minutes
Worked HR upto 183BPM ,3 off my max.Fitness is improving for sure as i'm having to work so much harder to get my HR up.Once i got my HR to around 165 ,pushed Crosstrainer to top level 20 and went flat til i hit 183BPM then dropped back down and held HR at 165PBM.
I really need to keep pushing my fitness ,i'm 35 next year and i lot of theses U105 boys are nearly 10 years younger than me, so theres no way i'm gonna let that be my excuse for not placing well.

Went to the gym to do some Cardio today, felt like crap after consuming too much Red Wine but forced myself before i started getting any lazier than i had the last few days.
Crosstrainer 30 minutes total
10 minutes of HR at 170BPM
Blasted up to a HR of 187BPM Held for 10 seconds then dropped resistance level right back for a few minutes to recover. My max HR for my age is 186BPM ,after hitting 187 i came soooooo close to puking over the Crosstrainer Think this would have been an instant ban if it had happened.
Last 15 minutes held HR between 165-170BPM.
