Figured I would start posting my workouts on here. Hopefully I can get some better insight on doing better at my next meet.

Tonight I did event training. Went ok.

Farmers walks weight is each hand
100x 2 trips of 150 feet with one turn.
150x 1 trip of 150 feet with one turn
200x2 trips of 75 feet no turns
250x25 feet kind of dissapointed as I really wanted to go at least 50 feet next time.

Tire flips
600 lb tire 6 flips could have done more but I got lazy.

Grip work and abs

Not a bad workout I wanted to do some stone loads but pussed out.

Did strict presses to start with straight bar.

barx10
95x8
115x5
135x5
155x1 used leg drive to get 5 that were easy I need more power without my legs
175x5 used leg drive on these

Rack lockout 12" ROM
225x5
275x5 was suprised how easy these felt my pr on these is like 350x5 so I will get back up to this slowly.

Overhead extensions
4x10

Chest supported rows
3x8

Scarecrows
3x10

Not a bad workout need to get stronger in the strict presses.

what are scarecrows????

Jessejobe
09-12-2005, 11:00 PM
They are a delt exercise I do them standing and you basically take a miniband or exercise tubing or cables and pull your arms straight back into a T. They are on Joe Defrancos site under the westside for skinny bastards routine. They hit my rear delts pretty nice if I do them for higher reps.

Hey Jesse, nice to see you posting your workouts on here. Do you have regular farmers handles or what do you use? I see your overhead pressing is right in line with mine. It is definitely my weak link.

Jessejobe
09-13-2005, 09:40 PM
I made mine from stuff from home depot they can hold quite a bit of weight. I am going to buy a real set soon as mine are pretty ghetto.

600x1 nice pr this felt pretty good had to do it twice couldn't quite lock it out the first time so I sat it down and realized I couldn't look like a weanie in front of my new training partner so I then I squashed it.

Hey Jesse, workouts are looking good. My 12" log finally showed up Wednesday so I can try it out tonight. Yeah, my rack pulls are going pretty good. I try to make sure and keep the bar at the knees or below, for me it helps better than starting above it. They were tough last night after doing those Vanco squats. Keep up the good work.

Great workouts Jesse, taken any shots at that beast of a tire?

Jessejobe
09-16-2005, 11:27 PM
I figured after being able to flip the 600 6-8 times I could get the biggin for 1 but I just can't get a grip on the big bastard. I will flip that son of gun at least 1 time within the year. Thanks for the encouragement though.

Decided to do squats, wasn't really feeling it but they ended up pretty good for what it was.

Raw close stance squats. I hate these with a passion but they are my weak point. My knee I had surgery on pops on every single rep, but I am getting better and sitting back using the close stance.

95x5
135x5x3
185x5
205x5

My goal right now is to get up to 300x5 with just a belt and knee sleeves.

One of my favorite movements! Great workout man!!!

Jessejobe
09-23-2005, 08:04 AM
Today was kind of depressing for me. I have gotten stronger in so many other things but so much weaker in others. Anyway my DL was way off where I thought it would be but not to far off.

DL off a 4" platform almost right on top of my toes.
135x5
185x5
225x5
275x5
315x3
365x1
405x1 it was a grinder to used no belt on all sets. My pr on these is 425 I really thought I would get 430-435 but not today the 405 gassed me. I need a constant good training partner again to push me, training alone sucks. It could have been a off day who knows.

Step ups
3x8

abs
6x15

Need to get more out of my workouts and maybe do some more reps in the DL although those have never translated to a better 1rm for me. I might do some more event training a couple times a week for a little while to break up the monontany a little bit.

Jesse

D.J. Satterfield

Hey Jesse, I am doing that Vanco squat thing that was posted on here earlier, as far as improving my deads, something you might look at. Also, I have a few good routines that might interest you from Powerlifting USA that have worked well for me in the past. I can send you copies if you are interested.
I know what you mean with going forward and backward in training. Just keep moving ahead and it all work work out. Remember, consistency is the key. Just keep training.

Jessejobe
09-24-2005, 08:26 PM
Was going to do event training today but earlier when I got home I went to dodge not running into my daughter and didn't have shoes on jammed my pinky toe right into the couch's legs. I think I might have broke my toe, if I didn't it sure hurts like hell. Anyways did what I could and dealt with the pain.

Sled pulls
170x100 feet
270x100 feet
370x100 feet
500x60 someodd feet this one was fun man my legs were burning.

Tire flips
600lb tirex 6 flips I pussed out I wanted 8-10 but I didn't have the balls today.

Did log presses today went ok.

Logx10
125x5
145x5
165x3
185x3
These felt pretty good used leg drive, I think the 185x3 is a pr somewhat. I am definately going to be doing more strict presses as I can already feel the difference in the overhead strength. I tried to do 205 for some reps but on my last rep with 185 I dropped the log and it hit my upper leg giving me a nasty charlie horse and I couldn't get no leg drive oh well I will destroy 200 for reps soon enough.

Lockouts
225x5
275x3
295x3
315x3

Rolling DB extensions
3x10

Good log work Jesse, you'll have the 200# soon, what size log do you train with?

Jessejobe
09-29-2005, 06:46 AM
The log that is:) I have hit 200 once before on it but without as many warmup sets. Right now I am shooting for some smaller goals. I would like to hit 185 for 5-6 reps and then get 200 for 3-4 reps. My big goal for the next year is to get 240 on the log. I don't think it is too lofty as long as I get it in gear.

Jesse

Jessejobe

Did DL off blocks today. It is a little bit lower than a 18" DL. I pull off of blocks I made out of 2x8. This is a really bad position to pull for me, cause I pull with alot of explosion off the ground.

Block pulls
135x8
185x5
225x5
275x5
315x3
365x1
405x1
455x1
505x1 5#pr I guess my DL is coming back. Last time I did these I managed 500 and I pulled 500 at my powerlifting meet with room to spare. Thought about doing one more but I like to leave things on a good note:)

Speed pulls
225x1x4
275x1x4

I am going to do Scott Tully Meet next may. Give 8 months to become a :F:. I would like to be able to hit a 240 log press by then I think with the right training and using my head it should be possible.

Good to hear you are doing the Salina meet, it is my plan to be healed up and better than ever for that meet. He is going to have it indoors next year, it should be a great show, his always are. I'll have to see how I heal up as to whether I stay in Open or do the masters to ease back into it. I definitely will go back to Open after his meet if all holds together. He is talking about the events being log for max., stones, 18" deadlift for max., power stairs and possibly farmers. Keep up the good work, log is looking good.

Does anyone else have problems using straps. I thought I would try them today since they are allowed at contest, but I hate them. I figure if I can't hold onto the weight I have no business trying to pick it up. Either that or I need to get a different set.

D.J. Satterfield
10-05-2005, 04:24 PM
I never use straps when training. The only time I use them is in the meet when I get to heavier weights. I figure why have my grip give out and not get the lift. It took me a long time to get use to them, as I can't use them in powerlifting. Nice Pulls Jesse.

Jessejobe
10-06-2005, 07:54 PM
Wasn't really going to do anything today but a guy I am helping train was doing as many reps as he could with 185 and only got 12, so I told he was a puss and I could knock out 15 with a close grip with no problem. So I did some close grip benches.

185x15x2 2 sets just to rub it in, considering I used to be able to 20-25 I was a little dissapointed although 20 might have happened.

Side lateral raises
3x12

crunches
3x25

Been pretty damn lazy lately but oh well did a log workout tonight. Did reverse band log presses, went ok.

logx15
125x8
165x5
185x5
205x3
215x3
235x3
255x1 tried 4 times to get 3 but couldn't lockout the other ones got 1 good one though.

3 board presses
225x5
245x5
275x5
295x5

These are getting better every week.

DB shoulder presses
40x10x2
50x10x2
These felt really good will probably give the 70's or 80's a shot for 6-8 reps in a couple weeks.

Gonna change the days I workout, a kid that lifts with me decided he would like to try and do the strongman comp next year so he is going to start training with me for it.

Today we only had like 30 min to lift so we decided to do some event stuff.

Super yoke
180x150
270x150
360x75
450x75
600xI felt like I was going to puke I could stand up with it but could not get moving. I should have tried 550 or something as I have done 500 with no problem in 11 sec. I think the fact that I have been a lazy ass and haven't been squatting has played a role in this.

Farmers walks
100x150
150x150
210x75 feet no drops

The kid got the 210 with 1 drop and tore some nice callous's. Didn't bitch at all just asked if I wanna workout tommorrow he is going to be a great partner.

Wasn't going to do anything today but my buddy came by and said lets flip the tire.

The guy that is trainging with me has never pulled a DL from the floor so we did raw DL from the floor. He ended up pulling 425.

My workout
135x8
185x5
225x5
275x3
315x3
365x1
405x1 all these sets were hook grip
460x1 raw pr by 5#
500xmiss got it to the knees but then pussed out.

I am pretty sure that at a meet I could pull 500 raw, my best pull in a meet is 500 at 242 I would like to pull 500+ at 220 I am 225 right now so I might do a DL meet in Nov and take a crack at it.

Backwards sled dragging with v handle
200x100 feet
300x100 feet
400x100 feet
500+x50 feet this a bitch my legs were just burning oh this was pr too.

Nice deads Jesse, what meet in November? I know of a real low key one at A.V. Sorensen and then Big Iron will also have one in November. Let me know so I can come watch and help you out. I'll be at the A.V. Sorenson one as some of the guys I work out with are going to bench at it.

Jessejobe
10-17-2005, 04:21 PM
It would be the AV meet. I always support what Kieth does there. I will have to see as I hate to just DL, but right now my bench and squat are just pathetic. I might try and put on a old bench shirt tommorrow and see how things go.

Did a log workout yesterday, it didn't go at all how I had planned so I will just leave it at that. The guy who is training with me got 185 on his first time using it he only weighs 185. I am almost at the point of just not caring about my log or overhead press, anyway enough of that rant and on to todays workout.

Started with mimicking the power stairs, we used a loading pin a cable crossover handle. 45's beat the hell out of your legs but gotta use what you got. We loaded them up to the tire which was 16" height, don't know how close that is to a contest but it felt pretty good.

100x5
150x5
200x3
250x3
300x1
400xoh so close couldn't get it to slide all the way but it was up on the lip.

Farmers walks
100 each hand x 400 feet 3 turns weight not heavy but my whole body was burning.
180 each hand x 200 feet 1 turn I think this is a pr for weight carried x distance.

Workouts looking good Jesse. Your shooting in the right direction for those power stairs. We used a pyramid-like shaped object with a handle on top, similar to what you are using. Scott has a really nice setup in Salina for those.
Hey, I'm with you on those OH log presses, I wish we could replace that event with something else.

I think I need to switch back to squats with a wider stance and to a box. I like them better and I feel that they transfer over better to stone lifting, tire flipping, DL. That and my knees don't hurt as bad.

Well if thats what you want to call it. I call it me being a pussy but oh well I just didn't feel like doing anything today. On a good note I get my 3 tires this week so that will make me happy.

Yoke walks for speed.
180x150 feet
270x150 feet
360x 4trips of 75 feet nice and fast for the most part.

Power stairs simulated we laid down my 800lb tire for these it 30 inches tall so it was quite a challenge to get the weight up that high.
100x5
150x5
200x5 kept the weight light but even 200lbs is a challenge at this height.

Keg carries
2 trips of 50 feet I made my keg heavierr but I didn't realize how much heavier I made it. Before I was knocking out 100 feet sets like nothing now 50 was a little bit hard. Gotta get back to it.

Much better, my friend, those are good pulls. What are the trap bar deads, what is the trap bar like?

Patrick McGuffin
11-03-2005, 08:17 PM
a trap bar is one of the hex shaped bars that you step into and usually do things like shrugs on

Jessejobe
11-04-2005, 06:56 AM
Thanks for the picture Patrick. I have the bottom one no raised handles. I actually use the trap bar more for DL than shrugs. It has definately helped my DL since it doesent hurt my back as much.

I have decided to go back to doing wide stance squats with bands. I feel they help me alot more with certain strongman events and are harder. I am also not going to be using breifs or suits anymore. Just a belt and wrist wraps.

Box squats to a 13" box all sets done with choked purple bands.

barx8x2
95x5
135x5
155x2x5
185x1
205x1
225x1

All felt pretty good not using briefs sucks but it will only make me stronger. My goal right now is to get up to doing 225-250 for my speed sets.

GMs
2x5 was going to do more but I hate GM's

Pullthroughs, ABS, calf raises all as one set nonstop for 3 sets was a little gassed after this.

Did some Rack DL today and did some other easy stuff.

Rack DL around 2" above knee.

The rack DL kind of torqued my back pretty good so I just wasn't into it after them. On a good note I think that a 600+ 18" DL will not be out of the question next may.

Wow, I can barely stay ahead of you on these rack pulls. That was a very impressive pull. I am going to try and get together with Shawn Baier over Thanksgiving to workout, I'll see what you are doing and maybe you can join us.
The 12" log is just a bit harder as the extra diameter makes it trickier. We'll get together before then and you can practice on mine.

Jessejobe
11-09-2005, 07:07 PM
You are probably ahead of them on me, cause honestly I don't think I had much more in me after that. That and the fact that you pull more than me from the floor. I wanted to do the AV meet but money is a little too tight right now. Being a bartender sucks cause weekends are my best time to make money and that is always when meets are. Thanks for the offer on working out and the log will be looking forward to it.

A little chilly out today but we got things done.

Started out with power stairs
100x5
200x3
250x3
300x3
350x3 pr
400x1 pr one was good enough hear, power stairs beat the shit out of your knees.

Farmers walks
150x100 feet one turn
200x100 feet one turn
250x 60 some odd feet decided to try and avoid the turn and drop them at 50 feet but my grip just wasn't the same after putting them down. Work on the turn and I will get 250 for 100 feet

Hey Jesse, if you have some knee sleeves, put them on or what I do is wear two on each leg as to keep my whole lower leg covered, this helps tremendously on saving your legs on those stairs. You are moving some good weight up those stairs.

Jessejobe
11-15-2005, 02:21 PM
Had knee sleeves on actually they just beat the shit out of my inside of my knees. I think I am going to get some knee sleeves like I used wear for wrestling they have some more padding on them. I am going to be building a set of powerstairs where we can go up 3 stairs just have to go and get the wood.

Jessejobe
11-18-2005, 09:00 PM
The weight is on 8" blocks. This is a very bad starting point for me as I can't produce hardly any speed. Right now my goal is to get 600 in may in the 18" DL I get that I will be very happy.

Did the log today didn't really know what I wanted to do so started out with strict presses and moved on to push presses.

logx10
95x8
125x5
145x5
165x2
185x3 push press
205x a whole bunch of misses I hate the log. It is a good thing there are 4 other events in strongman cause I suck at log presses, overhead presses and what not. First time I ever touched my log I did 200 lbs nothing impressive. So then I said I will just dedicate to improving my log press. Since doing this my log has not improved my lower numbers on the log have( my rep pr's). It is so damn frustrating. I need to come up with a plan and figure something out.

Incline presses very steep incline
135x5

Nice workouts, what contests are you going to enter?

Jessejobe
12-06-2005, 11:32 PM
I am going to do the strongman comp in salina in may. Then I will probably find a powerlifting comp sometime either in march or later in the year. There are always 4 or so a year around where I live so a powerlifting meet won't be too hard to find. The strongman comps on the other hand I have to travel usually. I would like to find another contest to do later in the year next year, but won't probably find any until the new year. That is fine though gives me time to get a better overhead press.

power stairs
100x3
200x3x8 sets all nice and explosive

Stone loads
200# stone x 3 loads to 60 inch platform. This was the first stone I ever made and it is a piece of crap. It falls every time I use it. I really need to get my ass in gear and make my other stones.

Farmers walks in the snow, talking about all this training in the snow I knew I had to get my ass in gear and do something outside.

100x100 feet 1 turn
150x 3 trips of 100 feet 1 turn. Cold weather sure makes it harder to hold onto the farmers that is for sure.

Thats it.

Good lifts w/ the farmers Jesse!

My kids are always in the gym when I am lifting. They always want to get real close when I am lifting. It's hard lifting w/ the kids around, but rewarding when they tell you "daddy, you must be the strongest in the world!" Kids are awesome.

Jessejobe

Yeah I like having my daughter out. She actually loves messing with the weights. A couple of weeks ago she pulled 30lbs in the DL, I even had her warmup and taught some correct form at 3 years old. Maybe it was stupid to let her but she loves it. My 12 year old has been working out a little bit to and did the bar for 5 reps in the bench last week. It makes me feel really good when I see them take a intrest. Yeah they know daddy is strong, but then they go to my contest and see me get my ass handed to me:) But at least they don't call me a loser.

Speed presses with log.

Strict presses with straight bar

Did log presses tonight with the mini bands. I don't know how much they were adding but I am guessing around 40-50 lbs based on where I ended up.

logx8
add minis
logx5
95x5
115x5 these were strict presses
145x2 tension really starting to kick in.
165x1 this was a grinder but I gutted it out I like how the bands really make me have to push through it, I need this.
175xmiss could not push through just ran out of gas. I have done this for a easy five so the bands really added some tension.

Close grips
135x8
185x5
225x5

I agree with you on the strict presses DJ. I hate the damn things though, but that we hate seems to help. I know one thing is for sure I am going to have to concentrate on my bench sometime next year cause I miss having a bigger bench. 400 at 198 is my small time goal for now. Although I would like to have a decent overhead press too.......... Can't have my cake and eat it to I guess.

Had a soso day but wasn't really what I wanted.

farmers walks
100 each hand x 100 feet one turn x 2
150 each hand x 100 feet one turn x 1
210-220 each hand x 100 feet one turn and one drop
260-270 each hand x 25 feet this is a pr for most weight ever carried but I really thought I would have went at least 50 feet without dropping it. I think it is the cold weather a little bit, holding on to cold handles seems to be harder to me.

Stone carry used a 200# or so river rock
2 trips of 75 feet

backwards sled pulls
200 x 100 feet
300 x 100 feet
400 x 75 feet

Kind of pissed off about the farmers walks but I will get them soon, 300 in each hand is my goal I want to hit by april, since the contest will be 250 in each hand so I figure might as well shoot for 300 in each hand to make things easier.

jesse

D.J. Satterfield

Get focused and stay consistent in your lifting, that is the key. Becca once told me that years ago, consistency, consistency, consistency. That press looked pretty good at 225. We'll have some good competition in Salina.
Keep up the work man.

Jesse

When you do close grip for BP, do you pause and press, or is it continuous?

Jessejobe
12-23-2005, 06:05 PM
It is continuous. Pausing really doesn't help all that much. If I was going to compete with a close grip I would pause but I feel my tris get a better pump or workout when I do them without pausing.

Well I officially hate the log press even more. Today was even a halfway decent day and i still hate the log.

Log press
logx8
125x5
165x3
185x1
205x2 this a good pr only reason I did 2 was I lost my balance on the first one and had to put it down quick so I did a 2nd one to make sure I could.
215x god knows how many times @$&#%$&%#&%
210x more misses I had it so close it was just sad but I couldn't finish it I threw down so hard im lucky I didn't dent it.

I have figured out on my heavy sets I am not doing everything right I am driving my legs but not like I do when I do my lighter sets. I had a decent day but when I jumped 5-10 lbs it felt like 30-50 lb jumps. Maybe I need to rest more in between sets I am lucky if I rest more than 1-2 minutes on heavy sets, might try resting 3-5 minutes see if that helps.

4 board presses
185x5
225x5
275x5
305x5 these are at least getting stronger.

Whoever thougth of pressing a log overhead should be put in front of a firing squad.

farmerse walks
115 each hand x 100 x 2 trips 1 turn
165 each hand x 100 feet x 1 1 turn
205 each hand x 100 feet x 1 1 turn
255 each hand x 25 dropped them and couldn't get myself going again. I like these farmers they are the ones that BS olympic sells. Pretty nice.

How thick the handle on the farmer's?

Jessejobe

The handles are 1.25 I believe. That is what the look and feel like to me. They are really worth the money and some of the best I have seen when you look at the price.

Glad to see you are back at it. Always remember, diet is VERY important in the iron game. I eat very strict six days a week and then cheat a little on Saturdays. Mentally, the Saturdays help keep me going but physically I sure feel more lethargic throughout the day.
Yeah, those farmers of Tullys are pretty nice.
Good work.

Been feeling kind of depressed and not really wanting to workout lately, but alas I push on and do what I can. Had food poisoning on monday which sucked really bad had to miss work I haven't missed a day in 6 years I hated having to miss work.

Did some pressing and squatting yesterday
Axle presses
70x8 strict presses
110x5
130x5
160x1
160x2 push press wow talk about weak
180x3 push press
200x1
220x miss my partner got this son of !#@# good for him though.

Squats
135x8
185x8
225x8
275x2
Most weight I have done in awhile this actually got me motivated to work on my squats.

Today did some sled pulling and stone work.
Backwards sled pulls
200x100 feet
300x75 feet
400x75 feet
500x75 feet
600x60 feet so close but ran out gas
800x25 feet this kicked my ass

Stone pickups with 200lb river rock for only being 200lbs this thing is quite the challenge. Picked it up 6 times.

800x25! you have to love those sled pulls. I add troy weights on mine. We have a football player friend that is about 300lbs. I swear when I am pulling that thing around this one corner It always feels ike my boy T-Roy has just jumped on it. AHHHHH. They kick my butt. I love them though. :YR:

DJ,

I am hoping to go to salina still. Somedays I say I am not most days I say I am. Right now I don't know if I will be able to get the time off of work, with us opening as a new casino in 1 1/2 months it is going to get hectic so who knows.

Nicolette,

Thank you for the complement. Now if I could just a find a contest with a backwards drag to show one of my strengths. I just want to get that 800lbs all the way down my driveway one of these days.

Jessejobe
01-13-2006, 08:22 PM
Bluffs Run otherwords known as HELL. No it ain't that bad but I have to deal with customers everyday and they make it a pain in the ass. I bartender in our Diamond lounge which is where our high level players go. But some of them like to make your life a pain in the ass. Money is good though so until I can hopefully be a personal trainer someday I will stay there.

I love sled drags. Brutal. Have you ever tried doing abackwards drag using a car or pickup truck? We do it some times for 200 ft and your quads feel like they are going to fall off! The pickup is easier than a heavy sled but it's a totally different feeling.

150x 1 trip of 150 feet with one turn
200x2 trips of 75 feet no turns
250x25 feet kind of dissapointed as I really wanted to go at least 50 feet next time.

Inclines with fat bar
110x8

220x3

Didn't feel like doing anything overhead so I did these nothing too heavy.

Squats
135x5
185x5
225x2x6
Just doing these for speed should have done these to a box.

Did a quick workout today just some farmers walks and stones.

Farmers walks
115 each handx 200 feet 1 turnx 2 sets
165 each handx 150 feet 1 turnx 2 sets
Not heavy at all but helped the grip alot got to start going heavier more often.

Stone pickups used my stones I just made using something smooth is quite different and more challenging.
170lb stonex 10 pickups this was easy but the 230 stone I made is not to heavy for me but it keeps rolling out of my hands since it is so smooth. I have alot of work to do on the stones, need to get tacky. I used rough stones for too long and they made things easy for me, using smooth ones is a whole new ballgame.

Strict log presses

95x5
125x5
145x5
165x4 pr for reps last time I only did 2
180x2 big pr last time I only got 170x1 so dbling 180 is really awesome.

Stone loads
170 stone x 5 did this as one set wow first 3 are pretty easy last 2 were not hard but you really get tired going to work up to doing sets of 10.
230 stone x 2 loads got this bastard and it was easy I bought some cheap spray on tacky and it helped alot I got imagine what good tacky will be like.

Farmers walks
115 each hand x 100 feet one turn
205 each hand x 100 feet one turn
255 each hand x 40-45 feet one turn pr last time I got 25 feet this time I added in a turn I think without the turn I could have went 60-75 feet will find out soon enough.

Holds from chinup bar 1min and 10 sec

Everything done was 10 reps and no rest in between
pushups
overhead presses

Had a great day today I finally know after today things are starting to go my way.

Started off with Super Yoke
290x100 feet
380x100 feet
470x50 feet
610x50 feet one drop at about 40 feet picked it back up and finished this is a 110# pr last time I tried this all I could do was stand up with it. Next step get this for 100 feet and then on to 700 and then 750 then 800.

Farmers walks
185 each hand x 50 feet
255 each hand x 70 feet or so big pr I could have went further but ran out of room and opted not to do a turn, I will do this weight again in about a month and go with a turn.

Hercules hold with 2" thick bar
225x30 sec with dbl overhand grip
225x1:15 sec with over/under could have went longer but it was pulling my bicep on the under.

Nice workout felt so good to have this kind of workout. I am kind of scared things have been going really good for me as far as my personal life, job, working out, money something is bound to bite me in the ass pretty soon oh well I will be ready for it.

Grreat work Jesse, that yoke work is super man. I see now I have got to load up my 2" bar and beat that dead. I don't know about me pulling 500 with it, that was a very impressive pull you did. Did you use a belt and straps?
As far as things going bad, just stay positive, it could be your time to stay away from bad things. Great workouts.

Jessejobe
02-24-2006, 09:59 PM
Just used a belt on the DL, straps on a axle DL kind of beats the point of doing them. I am pretty good for most weight until I get above the 650 range I can hold onto it most days that is. The axle bar tore my hands up pretty good, I was wearing sweat pants and right at the top it got caught and was almost ready to slip out but I finished it before it could. The yoke felt really good, I figure if I can get 700 for 75-100 feet within the next year that should be a pretty good accoplishment. Now if that damn log could just come around alot quicker.

Had a milestone day today didn't do much but just a really good day.

Tire flips
600lb tire x 3 flips x 3 sets this were so easy today should have been doing sets of 6-8 flips but didn't.

810lb tire x 1 flip that was it but I happy than hell just to do that. This damn tire is taller than me I am 5'11" and about 30" thick it is just a beast, I remember when I got it I never thought I would ever be able to flip it but today I conquered it. Now time to work on 2.

Farmers walks

logx5x2
135x5

215xmiss
205xmiss I am going to take this as a off day as I have dbled this weight granted it was on a 10" log. I actually like the way the 12" feels compared to the 10"

Farmers walks
115 each hand x 100 feet 1 turn 2 trips
165 each hand x 100 feet 1 turn
225 each hand x 100 feet no drops 1 turn
255 each hand x 25 feet ran out of gas just didn't have it.

DJ got the 255 for 100 feet no drops and then got 275 for 75 feet with no drops for 2 trips. Well now I can't even compete with the masters. Just kidding it was great working out with DJ can't wait to do more.

Had a ok day. Highlight of the day was seeing Gavin almost nail 300 on the log press 10" log he destroyed 255 and 275 and narrowly missed 300 only his 2nd time using the log. I think I almost have him convinced to try and do the contest in may.

My crappy log press
started out with strict presses
logx10
125x5
165x3
185x1 5#pr
push presses
185x3x3 nice and fast

Stones used my new elite tacky this stuff kicks ass
230x2
175x5
230x2
175x5

Awesome day on stones need to make a bigger stone.

Power stairs
250x3x5 Did these for speed.

Alright day pretty happy for the most parts.

Gavin only comes over on Tuesday right now. But I am hoping to convince him to do the meet in may. If he does decide to do it he might come over more than just tuesdays.

Did some upperbody stuff today. I think I might need to move this day to fridays or something cause I am usually to damn sore to do anything after event stuff.

Close grip benches
135x8x2
185x5
205x5
225x5
235x3
245x3
My bench has gone to complete shit but I still like to do them on occassion.

Rolling DB extensions
4x8

Band pull aparts
4x15

DB side raises
3x10

Lat pulldowns
5x10

Hammer curls with purple band

Ok workout some of it was just to get some of the soreness out from yesterday. Can't wait just paid for my 12" log hope to have it within a couple weeks and then I am working on making another stone hopefully in the 270 range and then I think I will buy a 20" mold and a make that stone.

Had a horrible workout last nigth did DL from the rack and the bar was like 5-6 below my knee which is a absolutely terrible spot for me. Ended up working up to a easy 515 and couldn't get anymore. So I did some other stuff but I couldn't just get back into it. I told my partner we should pull from the floor and do some reps but he disagreed and I didn't want to argue so next week I will pull from the floor.

So to punish myself today I did some GPP.

Sled Pulls
did these all nonstop
6 trips of forward pulling of 100 feet
4 trips of sprints of 100 feet
5 trips of ab work for 100 feet
3 trips of backward pulling for 100 feet
2 trips of shoulder work for a 100 feet

Felt pretty good took about 12min, Gotta save my energy for tonight wife wants to help me with some other GPP or GSR as I like to call it.

205x2x3 wasn't feeling right with the bands today so I took them off.
205x2x3

Squats finally feel like they are coming around, I hope they translate into something else event wise for me.

I think I finally found my nitch with the damn log press. Been toying the split jerk technique, I am not very good at it but I am alot more stable even with a small amount of split in my legs and able to lock the weight out easier. Did triples today and it went great.

Logx10
125x5
145x3
165x3
190x3 pr for 3
200x3 big pr for 3 stopped there didn't want to ruin a good night.

4 board presses
135x10

305x3

Should have done more but my biceps were killing me from the log.

Standing tricep extensions

Thanks DJ. It doesn't hurt none that I have been watching Gavin and picking things up from him. In case you haven't figured it out Gavin knows pressing. Heck the other day he was telling us about some of his other lifts like for instance he has done a 650 ass to ankles squat with just a belt I believe a 475 front squat. We are all in amazement and he is just like is that strong.

Did some event training today went alrigth kind of just didn't have the energy.

Farmers walks
115 each hand x 2 trips of 100 with a turn
165 each hand x 1 trip of 100 with a turn
235 each hand x 1 trip of 100 with a turn no drops pr decided to go after a little lighter weight instead of 250 each hand this felt pretty good I think 250 would have gone today with no drops but this is progress next week I will do a lighter weight for multiple sets and then go for 240 the week after that.

Stone Loads
170 stone x 5 x 2 sets
170 stone x 10

The 170 stone was easy of course but for some reason the 230 didn't feel heavy but I just couldn't get it loaded right.

Sled pulls
3 trips of 120 feet

abs
3x20

Pretty decent workout pretty happy with the farmers walks.

Had an ok workout I mean it wasn't bad but I just wasn't into it work pissed me off and I wasn't able to translate that into my workout.

DL
225x5x2
275x5
315x5
385x1
add belt
425x4 just couldn't gut the 5th one out so I aborted it still a pr for reps as I have always sucked at reps right now some of goals are 450x5 475x2 500x2 525x1 these are just short term. I don't DL for reps very often so something must be working.

Speed DL
315x1x6

reverse hypers
3x10

abs
3x20

speed sets with new log
6 sets of 3 reps

Pretty quick workout took 30min had Gabby out there with me so I couldn't go for that long.

225x2x2
275x2
305x2 raw pr to box first was not too hard second one was a little heavy

used the 12" log
logx5x2
140x5
180x3
205x1
215x1 5# pr still weak but at least it is moving up and it is with the 12" log which makes me happy.

Down sets did strict presses
140x5x3

Watched Gavin destroy a 270 log press and then he stopped there I wanted him to do 300 but he didn't want to today. Damn him.

Started out with farmers walks
115 each hand x 100 feet for 2 trips with a turn
205 each hand x 100 feet for 3 trips with a turn no drops on any of the sets grip is getting better.

Stone loads
230lb stone x 1 x 8 did 8 singles and worked on regripping the stone worked out alot better than what I have been doing. These were all very easy.

Rolling thunder
2x5

pinch grip block
did 4-5 sets and then got 45 lbs with my left 5#pr funny thing about the pinch grip block I have pinch gripped 2 35lb plates but 45lbs is a bitch with it but I will take a pr when I can get it.

Had a really good workout didn't do as much as usual but it was a really good workout.

Axle presses one clean then presses
110x5x2
130x5
160x5
180x5
200x4 couldn't breathe too well but this is still a pr for reps I wish I would have gotten 5 but 4 is still a pr. I think in a couple weeks I am going to max with the axle.

Stone loads
170x3
230x3
270x1x3 oh yeah made the 270 my bitch now. Did 3 singles first 2 were pretty decent 3rd one I was getting tired but I gutted it out. All loads were done to 52" platform.

Forgot to give a shout out to my training partners. Corey had a pretty good day but is a little overtrained in some areas(hint hint). Gavin ended up tripling 250 and 270 with the axle with ease and then naile 290 for a super easy singe he easily could have triple it. He also loaded the 270 stone times. Without Corey and Gavin I wouldn't be getting where I am getting .

This day is becoming kind of a depressing day for me. I used to have a pretty respectable bench press. Which I know for strongman don't mean sh*t, but I still miss it and for some reason I can't get it to come back. At least my overhead press is getting stronger.

Close grip benches
135x8x2
185x3
205x3
225x3
245x3
265x2 couldn't get 3 this really pissed me off. Back in the day I was doing this weight for 8 at least.

Tricep pressdowns

Box squats to a 16" box
135x8x2
185x5
225x5
245x2
275x2
295x2
315x1 stopped here all sets felt good but my knee was hurting a little bit. Got stupid and wrestled around with a buddy last night, little sore in spots im not used to.

Speed DL with sled pulls.

Had a training day today it went ok I was a little dissapointed in some areas but I think it is just some things to workout on form.

Log press
1st attempt 200 no leg hardly at all pretty much strict pressed it.
2nd attempt 210 same thing no timing but I got it.
3rd attempt 220 couldn't get no leg drive couldn't get it.

DL lockouts to sort of simulate the 18" DL
350x1
400x1
450x1
500x1
550x1
600x couldn't get it budged I don't know what the hell was going on here. I have done this for 4 before.

Farmers walks
250x100 feet no drops hell yes finally something that is going good.

Stones
did runs with the 4 stones I have went super fast on the first 3 but couldn't get the 330lb. I got it off the ground and damn near lapped it. I will get this big son of a bitch.
Stone runs were
170 to 54, 230 to 52, 270 to 48 and the 330 would have been to 44.

Overall it was a ok day. A little dissapointed with my log press and DL but I will figure that at. Gavin nailed a pretty nice 280 log press. He wants to do strongman fulltime next year and compete in the lightweights. When he decides to train this fulltime lookout.

Started out with push presses with the straight bar, ended up working on split jerks. Kind of hit a milestone tonight in the overhead press.

barx10
95x5
135x5
155x3
185x3
205x3
225x1 20#pr this was the milestone I have wanted to hit 2 plates on each side in the overhead for so long, now I finally got it and it feels good. Went for 235 and almost had it, decided to call it good there. Now on to 250.

Strict presses
3x5 with 135 nothing too heavy just wanted to get some extra tri and shoulder work in.

Tricep pressdowns

Chest supported rows

I just totally sucked ass today. I feel overtrained, gotta be smart with these last couple of weeks of training.

Farmers walks all sets with a turn
115 each hand x 100 feet x 2
185 each hand x 100 feet
205 each hand x 100 feet got too fast on the turn and screwed this one up.
225 each hand x 100 feet dropped this twice what the hell is wrong with me I have destroyed this weight many times.

Was extemely pissed off here almost quit the workout.

Power Stairs we set this up where we would do the weight 3 times then add 50lbs I sucked at these too.
250x3
300x3
350x3
400x not a fricking chance again another thing I am usually good at and I sucked at it.

Stones
230x 1 set of 5 this was a ass kicker I stopped here too pissed of at this point.

I think I need to take it easy a little bit this week. I am going to DL for reps on friday and do some sled pulling probably.

Went into this workout feeling like complete crap and unmotivated but it turned into a pretty good workout. Didn't go heavy just worked up to a good dbl which was a pr.

Pulls off of 8" blocks around a 16" DL
245x5x2
295x5
335x5
385x5
425x3
500x2 pr felt really good, funny thing was I got done and screamed hell yeah 3 rep pr. My buddy was like a no that was 2. I was kind of in a daze but then came to reality. 2 is still good for me as this height is a bitch to pull from from me. Next week I will pull for probably a heavy single from 2" higher and then rest up with some speed pulls the next week.

Shrugs
3x8

ABS
6x20 did jumproping in between sets.

Sweet!! In one week you popped 225 overhead and pulled 500 for a double, both big PR's.

That tells me that you are not overtrained, maybe you just need to reconsider your focus and streamline some of your workouts? Besides, farmers walk is one of those things that some days you have it and others you don't. Good job, keep working at it.

Jessejobe
04-22-2006, 04:50 PM
yeah I don't think it is overtraining either now. Somedays my head hasn't been into due to some financial issues. Farmers are one of those things that my grip can only handle a few sets before it goes out on me. I know at the competition I will not do very much warming up for the farmers as my grip is only good for one good run.

Thanks,

Did some squatting. I really shouldn't have even worked out but I did. Did something to my foot and it hurts like hell to put too much weight on it. So what do I do I squat. Sometimes I really deserve the pain I put myself in.

Regular squats
95x5x2
135x5
185x5
225x5
Messed around and did some dbl and singles with no belt.

12" log press

140x3
160x3

205x2 pr should have gone for 3 but I was happy with 2

Down sets

Thanks DJ,

I have to come up with a game plan for the log press. I saw that they will be 10# jumps. Usually that wouldn't bother me but since I am weak in comparison to alot of others in my class in the overhead department I need to figure out a plan. I know I have 220-225 in me maybe 230 if the gods are looking upon me. I am thinking of going 200-210 then 220 and then 230. If I got 230 I would be on cloud 9.

Plan was to pull a heavy single from a 18" position, I don't know what happended I hurt something and coulnd't even budge 425 without feeling like I was getting stabbed with a knife in the midsection. I really think it is DJ's fault, he brings his old crippled self over and I get hurt he is cursed. Just joking just had to say that. I really think is that position for pulling, for some reason I always feel pain from there. Anyway here is how it went.

Pulls from 18"
245x5x2
335x5
425x2 this is where I did something, tried numerous times to keep pulling but it hurt like hell.

So I did some speed pulls and they did not hurt at all.

245x3x8

Reverse hypers
3x8

I had to make something good of this workout so I did some power cleans.

135x5
155x3
185x3
205x1

This made me a little happier as I haven't been able to do cleans very very well without cheating them up. I want to get up to 250 on these just need to do them more often.

abs
3x20

I don't know what to do right now. I should have easily pulled over 600 from here but it just wasn't happening. I am thinking of pulling again on wednesday, cause I don't want to pull on friday or saturday too close. I think I will either pull for reps on wed or try a heavy single from the rack. Any suggestions taken please.

Don't get too stupid this close to the meet. I would pull again Wed. or Thurs. and just see how it feels. If ok, go heavy, if not, shut it down until the meet. Like you said, rest is a wonderful thing.

abs

That was it just a 30min workout.

Was feeling a little worried thought maybe I might have given myself a hernia but I think it was just a false alarm. I think my head was just playing games with me and I letting it win.

So yesterday we did the log press it went crappy but I had just gotten back from the daughter's track meet and sitting in the sun all day I don't think helped things that much.

So anyway did some tire flips with the 600# tire and that went pretty good.

600# tire for 8 flips made it 50 feet this was pr next time I will shoot for 75 feet then 100 feet.

Then went to do farmers walksand when I went to pick up the weight I felt a twinge in the lower ab area so I stopped here. Went inside and was pissed off all night.

Woke up today and decided hey if I am hurt screw it I am going to see how messed up I am.

Started off with rack pulls this was about a 22" DL.

135x5
225x5
315x3
405x3
500x1
550x1
600x1 stopped here as I was pleased with this and didn't want to push my luck wore a DL suit which I think helped supress anything in that area.

Stone loads didn't want to go too heavy on these so I decided to do some speed loads.

Did 5 sets of loads with my 170 and 230. The 230 went up very fast and easy and no pain. So I am going to take it easy and maybe do sled pulls this week and ab work. I will hit some speed and form work for the log also.

I've had a hernia scare too, yours sounds similar to what I experienced. I finally concluded that I am straining a muscle in my lower abdomen, because it heals up..........and hernias don't heal up!!

I did the same thing you did with my most recent scare. I went with progressively heavier front squats and set a PR.

I like your determination, you had a solid workout because of it.

Thanks Corey,

I am going to give all I have for the Salina meet. If I get 4 stones I will pretty happy cause that would be a pr.

I just got over a hernia operation (March 17) and am starting to feel more comfortable in the gym again. My hernia only hurt when I did certain movements while others were fine. Anything pulling hurt, buts squats and stones were fine. I could even do sit-ups without pain (although they twinge a bit now). My pain persisted for about 4 weeks without getting any better and then I went to see the doc. The other symptom that I had, although I don't know if it's normal or not, is that if I stood, just stood, for over an hour, I'd start to get an ache in that general area. Nothing sharp, but I'd definitely notice it.

If you do have one and get it repaired, you probably won't loose that much. The technique that they use now lets you get back into the gym pretty quickly. The second week after, I was doing movements with the bar only. Third week, movements w/135. Fourth week, movements w/225. Fifth week, back to somewhat "normal" weights. At six-and-a-half weeks, I hit a no-no squat triple with 465. Not a PR, but not too bad.

Figured I had to something today I wasn't going to do anything and try to let my body rest and recup. But I am antsy and couldn't not do nothing. Turns out I am glad I did. Thanks guy's for all your support and advice.

Sled pulls
Pulled forward for like 500 feet
did some upperbody work for like 200 feet
and then did some backwards pulling for 200 feet

Sled pulls got me nice and warmed up.

Farmers walks
110 each hand x 100 feet turn
160 each hand x 100 feet turn
200 each hand x 100 feet turn

These all felt real good I wanted to go to 250 each hand but decided to save it for next week. I will get it no drops. Felt no pain on these so that was a relief.

Power stairs for speed
250x3x4 nice and fast

That was it should have done some reverse hypers and abs but I think I will them tommorrow.

Didn't feel any pain. The area in question still has some soreness but it is never bad just annoying. I think more than anything it is in my head. This workout helped reassure myself.

Had a to wait a day or 2 to post my results. Was very disssapointed in how I did overall but I realize what I need to work and what to fix. The meet itself was awesome and very well run. Great equipment and having Travis Ortmeyer yelling at you for encouragement you can't beat that.

1st event log press for max.
This was the one event that went well for me. I knew I wasn't going to win the log so I went for a pr and got it. Got 220 on my 3rd 5#pr.

2nd event Silver Dollar DL
I hate this event now it just sucks. Very wierd for me. I am used to being a fast puller and to me you can't really pull like this on this, at least I couldn't figure out how to. Ended up getting 600 and missed 650. This was very discouraging. But I think I know what I need to work on for these.

3rd event Power Stairs
I also hate this event but I think that is only cause I didn't really know how to do it right. I know now you need to really high pull the weight up, I was basically DL it up which takes to long. I got the 300 and 350 up all 3 stairs and got 400 to 1 stair. I moved very slow on these and was winded quickly.

4th event farmer walks
I thought I would do well on these as I had gotten quite a bit better at them. But the power stairs tore my hands up pretty good and I had no grip. Drop the implements at around 25 feet and then made it to the turn dropped them again, got them going dropped them after 10 more feet picked them up one more time and got about another 25 feet and ran out of time. Ortmeyer was screaming at me winners don't quit, hated to let the guy down.

5th event stones
These went as much as I expected them to. I have only loaded a 270 stone at the most in training. I loaded the 225, the 250, then the 270 all pretty easy. Went after the 310 almost had it lapped and then couldn't get it after that. I am making a 310 stone this week and that son of a bitch will get loaded within 2 months.

Overall I got last place. I know I need to lose weight. I put on 15lbs for this contest thinking it would be better for me, it wasn't it made me slow and uncomfortable. I am going to get down to 231 and work on leaning out a little bit. I am going to hit alot more front squatting and regular squatting. Next contest will be a leaner meaner Jesse who can hopefully do alot more weight in the log press and DL.

Sounds like a tough contest, forget about last place, you did well. Great log press and you gained a lot of experience.

That's hilarious that Travis was yelling that to you, he must always be intense. You and I have something in common, we've both been yelled at by a member of "The Unit" while competing and we both vowed to make a 300lb stone afterwards. Mine turned out ok, how are you making yours?

Jessejobe

I have 3 slaters molds so I will be using that and a 8" foam insert.

Jesse

Did some event stuff today nothing too crazy, still a little beat up from saturday.

Viking presses
apparatusx10
1 plate each sidex8
2 plates each sidex8
3 plates each sidex5
4 plates each sidex5
5 plates each sidex2 I think I could have gotten one more but it would been a nut buster.

Frame carry
We weighed the frame and it weighs around 80lbs so the weight listed is with the frame weight.
170x100 feet did a turn with it alot easier to control than the farmers.
260x100 feet with turn
440x100 feet dropped it at 50 feet and picked it back up and went back.

I like this thing a little harder to pick up with the heavier weights than farmers or maybe I am just tired still. I think doing heavy pulls with this would maybe help my lockout with the DL. Kind of like doing the snatch grip DL.

We were going to flip the tire and then decided against it. So then we were going to do stone loads and corey had a little accident that we had to laugh about and never got back to finishing the workout. Gonna do some upperbody tommorrow.

Jesse-

Lookin' at your contest results. It looks like you did pretty good, all things considered. My first contest, I got my butt stomped. It never feels good getting schooled. My thoughts afterwords were: "That will never happen again!" And it hasn't, nor will it. I'm sure you're in the same boat. Keep your chin up, train hard/smart, and you'll reap the rewards...

I appreciate the comments. I know for me I have some things to work on and I will hit them hard. I know one thing is for sure I have to stay in the 231 class and get some good weight on me, Cause man I have gotten pretty damn fat. If I can get this buddha off of me it is going to help alot. Next meet is going to be a whole different Jesse.

Did some rep DL tonight didn't go all out but it felt good.

Trap bar DL off 8" platforms makes the pull start at about 16"
135x10
225x5
315x5
405x10

Going to do these again in about 3-4 weeks and give 500 a try and hope to get 10. This is about the closest way I can think of to simulate the car DL.

Power Cleans
135x5
155x3
185x3

Have a goal to get to 250 on these by the end of summer I think if I actually start doing them on a regualar basis I should nail it.

reverse hypers
2x10

calf raises

Well got some new toys today and thanks DJ they are pretty nice and got 2 more tires 1 is a 500lb the other is a 600. They are huge for 500 and 600. I can flip the 600 pretty easy but I cannot get a grip on the 500, that damn thing is going to piss me off to no end. Anyway after rearranging the gym and moving around 3000lbs of weights and equipment I decided to workout. And amazingly it went well.

Axle presses
70x8x2
110x5
160x3
180x1
200x1
220x1 pr
230xmiss should of had this but pussed out.

Close grip benches
205x3
225x3
245x3
265x3 pr I think but maybe 275x3 is my close grip pr.

Superset of pushdowns and lat pulldowns on new machine.
5x10

Nice workout pretty happy with this workout.

First workout

Farmers walks
110x each hand for 2 trips of 100 feet
200x each hand for 1 trip 50 feet
265 each hand x couldn't move it
235 each handx 50 feet pretty sad.

Stones
1 run of 170, 210, 230, 250
I was just out of gas on everything today

Watched Corey load the 270 for his first time it was pretty excitiing he was pumped.

Took an hour break waited for Jerry to get off work and come over to workout.

Did some more stones
1 run of 170, 210, 230

Then did 1 set of 5 with the 170 and 1 set of 5 with the 210.

Kind of a crappy workout but better than nothing.

Jessejobe
05-25-2006, 10:35 PM
We are trying to hit some morning workouts 3 times a week. I like to do them on days after I worked out like mon, wed, fri. So far I am liking them they help me feel more alert during the and will hopefully help get my fatass in shape and maybe at least have a 4 pack. I don't think a 6 pack will happen without cosmetic surgery.

Awesome workout today started out with some DL from the floor.

135x5x2
225x5
315x3
405x2
455x1
515x1 massive pr hell yeah just a belt on.

DJ was doing frame carries so I jumped in to those.
170x150 feet
260x150 feet
360x150 feet
440x150 feet 1 sit down at 75 feet
540x25 feet grip was spent but still a pr that bastard DJ got this for 75 feet damn him and his damn good grip.

Stones
1 run 170, 210, 230, 250, 270 that was it for stones I was spent.

Finished up with some abs and leg curls. Might wake up before work a little early and hit some more core work.

Did some squats today they sucked at first but got better at the end. Did the workout fast as it was hot as hell in the garage. Basically the whole workout was like a circuit.

box squats
warmups then 8 sets of 2 reps felt pretty good once I got moving.

Leg curls
3x20

pec deck
3x15 just to get some blood flowing in my chest.

Lat pulldowns
3x20

abs
6x20

workout took 25 min too damn hot and I was working out by myself so wasn't too motivated.

Started out with some overhead presses but with a twist did them as a medley and they sucked. But it was fun.

the order went Fatbar, 10" log, Straight bar, 12" log

Weights 140, 160, 185, 200 went thru this 2 times but the 12" log sucked 200 isn't usually hard at all but after the other 3 it was hard to breathe.

Decided to take away the 12" log and do the first 3 instead.

Weights were 160, 180, 200 These were all nice and explosive we went thru this 2 times. I will do this again in about a month and bump the weights and probably add a keg press.

Down set with fat bar
160x10

DB presses
3x8

Tricep pressdowns
5x10

That was it getting used to the heat again I was sweating like a stuck hog.
