Default 2010 Nationals Write- Up with Video

This competition was a lot of first for me. It was my first nationals, my first time flying, my first time being west of the central time zone. This will also be the first write up I have ever done so hopefully it will make since.

I have been known to over analyze and stress myself out so I approached this competition with a little bit different demeanor. I was going to do all I could on every event and see where the cards fall. I felt things went much better because of this and I had a lot more fun. After all this is the mentality all competitions should be approached with. Now on to the competing.

Got there on Wednesday. Weighed in Thursday morning at 228.8. My first thought was "man I could have ate breakfast."

Day 1:
700 yoke/250 sandbag
Coming in to this event I knew it had the potential to be a good one for me Yoke and farmers have always been my best two events. Kept a good pace with the yoke and made a smooth transition to the bag. Finished in 19.62 seconds. Good enough for 6th place. A PR time for me that I was happy with.

150 lb dumbell
In warmups I was having a little difficulty finding the groove on this dumbell. Smaller than mine and slid off the shoulder much easier. When the whistle blew I managed a quick 5. Felt great on 5 then all of the sudden I couldn't breathe and the 6th one wouldn't go. Have to work on the endurance. Not a complete disappointment but really wanted 6 and 7. I believe this put me in like a 7 way tie for 13th place.

Car deadlift
I am a decent deadlifter, but have never touched a car deadlift in my life. Never even seen one in person till this competition. I started pulling. Honestly felt more like a hack squat to me than a deadlift, which to me is a bad thing. Somehow I still tried to stiff leg, round back it, and it got ugly. I managed 11. Not to disappointed because I didn't know what to expect. In hindsight I should have trained more touch and go reps worked on controlling the eccentric portion and just barley tapping the ground and coming up. I didn't think we would be able to touch and go on the car. I think the 11 reps was good for somewhere around 20th.

After Day 1 was in 7th overall.

Day 2-
I woke up feeling like I had been punched in the back by Mike Tyson repeatedly. Took a hot shower. Rolled around on the foam roller, used the stick to roll out my back. Then I put icyhot on and borrowed the electronic stem belt from a buddy. Wore it for about an hour. When I took it off my back felt great. Never wore one before, but I'm a believer.

250 Axle Press
Started on these felt great till 5 then died on the 6th much like on the dumbell. Didn't have this problem at home. Was consistently hitting 6 in training. Not sure if it was altitude or just nerve making me breathe harder. Either way couldn't get the 6th. Got dizzy had to take a knee for a moment. Was disappointed not to get six. Think I finished around 17th or so in this event.

At this point, amazingly, I was in 6th overall.

230/250 Keg 600 Sled
This is where it fell apart for me. Grabbed the kegs was 30 ft ahead of my entire group when I set the kegs down. Started to drag and watched everyone of them close the gap and go right by me. Drags have never been my best event but have never let me down this bad. I may lose again, but it wont be because of this. I will drag every week until this is fixed. Finished around 63 seconds. Something like 45th place overall. Dropped me out of the top 10.

600 Frame- I knew this had the potential to be my best event, but also knew that with a short distance and relatively light frame that all the times would be super close so nothing was guaranteed. I went in the third heat of this event. Posted the time to beat at 7.75 seconds. Special thanks to Brandon McDonald in the lane to my left. I could see him out of the corner of my eye so I knew I had to keep picking up pace. I held the time to beat through the next 8 groups. When the final group got up Lane and Kurian blistered the course both beating my time, and deservingly so. Finished 3rd in the frame moving me back to 10th overall.

Stones- Managed the first three pretty quick and easily. Couldnt manage the 4th one. Disappointing because I load it routinely in training. The platform heights were just at that height where I really have to extend and roll my back out. That is a weakness for me. I am much better when I can pop the hips and toss the stone. Need to work on rolling them up. Not sure the placing here.

After eating and eating and eating and taking a shower. Went to awards. After all was said and done I was 9th overall. I didnt get a good look at the 231 sheet because I was more concerned with the overall.

It was a good learning experience. I know have something to build on and know exactly what I need to work on.

Side Notes: If you are ever at a competition. Hang out with Aaron West. He will keep you from getting nervous.

Adam Lane: Straight cleaning the axle every rep= very impressive.

Zach Nimms Loading 5th Stone = perfect ending to a deserving champion.

Kurian = overall impressive showed no glaring weakness will be hard to beat.

Thanks Pierre. Good to see you again as well. You had some impressive showings yourself. The first flight was alright. Kind of glad I got it over with. I know what to expect when flying now so hopefully that will open the door to more traveling. Train hard. Im taking a little time off. I trained around a few injuries for Nats trying to actually let them heal up. Took off last week, think I am going to rest this week as well. Then after Thanksgiving its back to the grindstone. Im working on building a car deadlift. So if you are ever in the mood to train. You are welcome here anytime.
