Once again, the Sequim gang made this show happen and it was a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed seeing two Olympic lifters, Robbie Walden and Al Reed, on the Axle lift. Robbie's mid-air hand switching with 100 lbs over bodyweight was amazing and Al lifted over 300 lbs on his first time trying the event -- he had never done any of the events and only heard about the contest one day before.
As someone that actually trains on these events, I am amazed by guys like Tim Howe and Max LeFevre who haven't tried them in a year and do so well. Tim won the lightweight class at this contest and was WA Strongest Man under 200 lb a couple of years ago. Last year, Max came out of nowhere to win WA Strongest Man in the 231 lb class. I always enjoy seeing Rocco lift stones. At this contest he did well on every event including stones and adds 'West Coast Strongest Man' to his list of titles. If he skips graduation he may be at Redhook on June 25th! Hopefully Tim Nagy's hamstring will recover in time for this contest too. There were also a lot of new athletes -- Jesse and Callie are doing a great job of spreading the word, especially among the teens and they all competed with a passion. I've uploaded some pictures to the 'photos' section of my contest site: http://www.strengthevents.com The photos aren't great, but if you want any of them, email me and I'll send a slightly higher resolution version to you. |

Resident Viking Dan Harrison made 3rd place! I hear he had a 330 axle locked out overhead but couldn't quite hang onto it for the down signal. Time to eat your Wheaties!

Yeah, i had it locked out for like a second but with the forward momentum i had put into the press, i was leaning a little forward and i dropped it. I tried to pick it up again and try the press before my time ran out, but who would think that cleaning and pressing a 330 axle the second time in a minute would be harder than the first time?? Gosh....I should have eaten more orphans last week. On a slightly better angled press, i would have had 330. I ain't no pro strongman, so i don't see what the big deal is about a 350 or 360 axle. People should be doing 500 if some california asshole like me is working up to 350.
Next contest there is a 13" log press, so let's see if I can lock out at least 320. And to anyone who was there, that chick who competed who had the nice legs and the black tights/black hair....YIKES! Hot stuff. Best looking strongwoman I've ever seen (sorry Callie...I'm not into blondes hahah)

I want to thank everyone who made west coast strongman happen!! All the competors did awesome!!! Also thanks to Jesse for doing such a great job on the mic... Thanks to Sarge, Grant, and other helpers who did the physical work and officiating at the show... MY training partners Nick Breck John and Jesse who loaded everything sat!! They worked really hard to get all the equipment into the truck and trailer... Gigi did all the scoring!! Without her we would have not been able to get results!! And everyone who helped to load back up on sun, Marshall Jerry and Steve!!! All other people who helped thanks!!
Were really looking forward to doing it again next year!! Callie |
